Marie Bouzkova v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between Bouzkova and Tomljanovic and the latter had won that. That came at the 2019 US Open with Tomljanovic winning that first round encounter in three sets.

Bouzkova at Career-Best

Ranked 46th right now, it’s Bouzkova’s best ever WTA ranking, brought about thank mainly due to the final she made at the Monterrey Open earlier this year. Since the return of tennis in August, Bouzkova has added to that with a couple of solid showings too.

At the Lexington Open, Bouzkova made it to the quarterfinal at the expense of Johanna Konta and Anna Blinkova. And she repeated that at the Cincinnati Open with a win over Anna Kalinskaya before she shocked Petra Kvitova in the second round.

What would, then, be an irritant would be her first round exit at the US Open, which might not cost her any points but given her form it was a missed opportunity.

As she shifts tack now, and features on clay, the question is whether she would be able to adapt. After all she hasn’t played a single match on clay so far and over the last two seasons, Bouzkova has a 7-9 win-loss record on that surface.

Tomljanovic on a Three-Match Losing Streak

While Tomljanovic was involved in three tennis competitions during the pandemic break, her results post the resumption have left a lot to desire. She started off with a drubbing at the hands of Yulia Putintseva in the Lexington Open and then lost back to back opening round matches at the Cincinnati Open and US Open.

Against Veronika Kudermetova at the Western & Southern Open, Tomljanovic blew away a set lead to lose 7-5 in the third while Angelique Kerber had no trouble breezing past the Aussie 6-4, 6-4 in the US Open opener.

Tomljanovic’s record on clay in recent times is no better than Bouzkova’s either, although three of her four ITF-level competition wins have come on red dirt. Last year, Tomljanovic had made it to the semifinal at Rabat too, and a third round in Charleston but her inconsistencies have meant she has fallen to 59th in the world from her own career-best of 39th.
