The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 32-year-old American, and the Spaniard, who is nine years his junior.

Querrey Lacking Match Fitness
Now 32, Querrey is known for his powerful serve, and holds the record for the most consecutive aces in a match (10). he has won ten ATP titles, but the last of those came in 2017, and his most recent final was on the grass of Eastbourne last year.
He is primarily a hard court player, but did win a singles title on clay in Belgrade a decade ago.
Prior to lockdown, he had played very little tennis in 2020, reaching the second round in Adelaide, and then matching his previous best showing in Melbourne by reaching the third round before losing to compatriot Tennys Sandgren in straight sets.
He has not won a match since the competitive resumption of the sport either. Milos Raonic defeated him in the first round in the Cincinnati Open. and then Andrey Kuznetsov beat him at the same stage of the US Open.

Martinez Playing on His Favourite Surface
Martinez has never won a senior ATP event, or even been in a final, but he has had success on the junior tours, where he has been in 17 finals, winning nine of them, with all but one of those victories coming on clay.
His most recent tournament win was in the Challenger event in Bastad, Sweden two years ago.
He began the year by qualifying for the Australian Open, and then reaching the second round, the first time he had won a match at a Grand Slam event.
Then he turned his attention to the South American clay court circuit, where his best performance came in Rio – he came through qualifying and then made it as far as the third round.
Since lockdown, he had a good win over Steve Johnson of the United States at the Cincinnati Open, but then lost to Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.
He was beaten in the first round of the US Open by the German Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets.
Querrey v Martinez Prediction and Tip
Although Querrey is the higher ranked of the two, he lacks match fitness not having played much in 2020. Martinez is in the main draw in Rome for the first time, but he is playing on his favourite surface of clay, and that could help him pull off a surprise.
Tip: Martinez to win: 13/8 (bet365)
