Polona Hercog v Kaja Juvan Head to Head

This will be the first time the 29-year-old Hercog will be facing the 102nd-ranked countrywoman Juvan, who is 10 years her junior.

Hercog’s Not Played a Lot This Season

Since the pandemic-caused tennis suspension was lifted, Hercog’s participated in three tournaments but that’s exactly the number of competitions she played in before the break. And she had won just one main draw match, which came at the Australian Open where she defeated Rebecca Peterson.

On her return, she started off with back to back opening defeats on the clay courts of Palermo Open and Prague Open but she finally got into her own with a solid showing in Istanbul.

Hercog won a couple of matches in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinal where she let go of a one set lead to lose to Paula Badosa.

Now she returns to the venue where she had made the third round in 2011, in what has been her best showing at a Premier tennis tournament. Not to mention, Hercog has a total of 20 career titles spread across different circuits and all of them have come on clay – she should feel at home here.

Juvan Closing in on the Top 100 Spot

In 2018, the then-17-year-old Juvan was outside the top 500 on the WTA rankings. Fast-forward a couple of years and a couple of wins here and there could well propel her into the top 100 for the first time, with Juvan at her career best of 102nd at the moment.

And so spectacular has been her rise to her current standing, Juvan will actually be starting out in this match as a favourite. Yep, she is 8/11 to win this match to her opponent’s 1/1.

The reason for that is simple. Jucan’s the in-form player, she has won multiple ITF-level tournaments on clay and is currently coming off some solid performances at different WTA competitions. Like for example, at the Palermo Open, Juvan made it to the main draw through the qualifiers and then shocked Marketa Vondrousova in the second round.

Or when she defeated Lauren Davis in the qualifiers here in Rome.

The 19-year-old has the weapons for clay, even against a player who reserves her best for this surface too. The younger legs of Juvan will help her too as she looks to play her third match in as many days.

Hercog v Juvan Prediction & Tip

As mentioned earlier, Juvan starts off a favourite but frankly it’s a tough call to make given Hercog’s experience. Instead we anticipate a fighting match and are looking at the games market for this.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
