Tennys Sandgren v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

Sandgren Hoping to Continue Unbeaten Run on Clay
The American is predominantly a hard court player but his performances on the red soil have been improving in the last few seasons.
Despite playing a lot on the challenger tour, last year he performed admirably on clay. He reached the final of the Sarasota Challenger and came through qualifying rounds to reach the main draw at the French Open.
This year he has been unbeaten on the surface so far after five matches. He won three matches at Altec Styslinger Tennis Exhibition and two in the qualifying rounds here at Rome.
Sandgren had a brilliant start to the season where he shocked many by reaching the last eight at the Australian Open. He lost to Roger Federer in five sets but it was expected that he will use that run as a springboard to a strong season. But his form suffered after that with an early exit at New York followed by an injury and season suspension.
The 29-year-old used the break to gain his fitness and played a lot of exhibition events. And despite an early exit from US Open his performances since the season resumed have been encouraging. This is the first time he is playing at the tournament’s main draw and a strong run here will give him a chance to go past his career-best ranking of 41.

Caruso Turns His Season Around Post Resumption
The 27-year-old Italian had a below-par first half of the season before the season was halted. His win-loss record was 4-9 and he had won two matches in a tournament once this season, that was during the qualifying stages at Adelaide. But since the season resumed, his performances have improved a lot and his win-loss record has been 6-2 since then.
He reached the third round at the US Open before losing to Andrey Rublev. And he would be relishing his good form going into the clay-court season, his favourite surface. The turnaround in his form has already reflected in his ranking in a positive way. He is currently on his career-best ranking of 87th in the world.
This is the sixth time that Caruso is playing at the tournament but has only made it to the main draw once. That was back in 2016 when he lost in the opening round itself. Thus this match presents a great opportunity for the home favourite to notch up his first-ever main draw win at the tournament.
Tennys Sandgren v Salvatore Caruso Prediction & Tip
This is likely to be a very close match. There is little separating the two players in terms of the rankings and form. Both the players like to control the point from the baseline and are similar in terms of playing style. The fact that Sandgren has already played a couple of matches on the surface during the qualifying rounds will give him a slight edge.
Tip: Sandgren to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
