Two previous meetings between these two player have led to Mertens winning both times including once on the ITF circuit and the second time at the 2017 WTA Tokyo.

Solid Mertens Continues to Add the Ws

W for wins, that is.

Since her shock loss in the first round of the Palermo Open which was also her first tournament since returning back, Mertens has been rock-solid, with only some stupendous performances able to get the better of her.

In the very next tournament in Prague, Mertens made the final, and then reached the semifinal at the Cincinnati Open before finishing up as a quarterfinalist at the US Open. That followed her fourth round showing at the Australian Open earlier too, which has pushed her to 20th in the world.

And starting out at the Italian Open against Hsieh Su-wei, Mertens registered a straight-set win as was expected out of her. In fact, straight-set wins have become somewhat of a norm with Mertens, for whom nine of her previous 10 wins on tour have been straight-setters.

Now that she has improved on her Rome showing from the previous year, expect her to go deeper in this tournament.

Linette Disposes off Former French Open Winner

Jelena Ostapenko had shown some signs of a resurrection in the few months leading up to the pandemic lockdown but against Linette in the first round of this Italian Open, it looks to have all gone back. Or may be, Linette made Ostapenko look anything but a former Roland Garros champion.

Linette did not spend too much time on court in winning her first round match against Ostapenko, defeating her 6-4, 6-3 to march into the second round of the Italian Open. And in doing so, the Pole had won her first ever main draw match in this competition, having never qualified for it in the past.

In fact this is her best showing at a clay court tournament under the WTA Premier banner too. It wouldn’t be easy but another win here will make it Linette’s best showing at a WTA Premier tournament, having never made it past the third round.

Can she take confidence from an otherwise sterling 2020 for her, which has included a Hua Hin Open title win as well?

Mertens v Linette Prediction & Tip

Merten is a whopping 1/7 to win this and while we are going to back her here, those are not value odds. Instead look at the games market for this one.

Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
