Matteo Berrettini v Federico Coria Head to Head

There has been one previous match between Berrettini and Coria and the Italian world number won that at the San Benedetto Challenger on clay in 2017.

Berrettini Kick-Starts Clay Campaign

The world number eight hasn’t featured in too many competitions on the circuit this season, having participated in only the Australian Open before tennis went on a break because of the pandemic.

On its return, he travelled to USA to feature in the Cincinnati Open-US Open bubble, and reached the fourth round at the latter before falling to Andrey Rublev.

During the break, however, Berrettini had been very active. It started with featuring in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, and moved to the Thiem’s 7 where he reached the semifinal on clay. A couple other tournaments followed as Berrettini looked to get as much tennis under his belt.

Berrettini loves his clay as can be seen from the fact that two of his ATP titles have come on this surface. He hasn’t done as well at the French Open as he would have liked – third round in 2018 being his best – while having made the third round at the Italian Open as well.

This time around, with a favourable draw – he plays the winner of two unseeded players next if he wins this – Berrettini would back himself to at least get to the last eight. It all needs to start on Wednesday though as he looks for a convincing win over a player ranked outside the top 100.

Coria Shocks Struff

A quarterfinal at the ATP Rio would have helped his confidence but for Coria to come through to the second round here with a win over the in-form Jan-Lennard Struff is stuff of dreams. Having started the match at odds of 7/3, Coria came through quickly with a 6-1, 7-6 victory in the first round.

Earlier, he had had to qualify for the Italian Open by winning a whopping three matches in a row and with the French Open approaching these few win would be a shot in the arm.

Coria is also coming off a brilliant season at the lower tier, last year. Playing most of his matches on clay, Coria ended the year with a win-loss record of 56-27, which meant he improved from his season low ranking of 288th to finish the year at 120th.

And now having reached the second round at the Italian Open there’s ample chance he would be able to add a few more points to push him into the top 100. Can he cause an upset though?

Berrettini v Coria Prediction and Tip

Coria has already caused one upset in the form of the defeat of Struff but Berrettini should prove to be too good for him despite not having played on clay for more than two months.

Tip: Berrettini to win: 2/9 (bet365)
