Petra Martic v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

There has been just one previous meeting between Martic and Putintseva with the Kazakh world number 30 having gotten the better of the Croat. That came recently at the US Open where Putintseva made the quarterfinal by beating Martic in three close sets.

Clay Court Specialist Martic with an Opening Bye

Two of Martic’s best seasons on clay came in 2017 and 2019. The first of those came at the lower, ITF circuit where Martic won one title, made the final at one other and semifinal of two competitions before making it to the French Open fourth round as a qualifier that year.

It propelled her up the rankings chart but the real boom came in 2019 when Martic featured in four clay court competitions and went on to win the Istanbul Cup. That was not it though.

There was a semifinal at the Charleston Open, and quarterfinal appearances at the Madrid and French Open, culminating into Martic breaking into the top 25 on the rankings chart. Fourth round appearances at both, Wimbledon and US Open furthered her cause as she ended the season ranked 15th.

Now, armed with a couple of semifinals already this season including one on the clay courts of Palermo, Martic will be baying for more. A solid run at this Italian Open where her best run has been a second round place will, after all, propel her upwards yet again.

US Open Quarterfinalist Putintseva Sends out Peterson

With Putintseva making the quarterfinals at the US Open earlier this year, it’s easy to forget her top performances prior to that had come on clay. At Roland-Garros, Putintseva has twice made the last eight stage – in 2016 and 2018 – losing only to Serena Williams and Madison Keys.

This season, like most other players, Putintseva hadn’t played any clay court competitions before this tournament but it did not seem like that was the case in her opener. Playing Rebecca Peterson in her opener, Putintseva registered a crushing 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Swede to march into the second round.

Strangely though, despite her solid French Open record, Peterson has never made it past the second round here at Rome. Even at Madrid, the host of the other clay court WTA Premier tournament, Putintseva’s best showing has been one appearance in the third round.

She has a chance to at at least emulate that as she takes on Martic in round two, a player she had beaten as recently as the previous week. It would be a different surface and hence. a different cup of tea, but Putintseva will take confidence from their previous result.

Martic v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Martic is 4/6 to win this match, starting favourite to Putintseva’s 11/10. While Putintseva will carry the confidence from their previous meeting, clay could come to Martic’s aid and help cross the line.

Tip: Martic to win: 4/6 (bet365)
