Katerina Siniakova v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head

The pair have met three times so far on the tour. And the Russian has won on all three occasions. Their first-ever meeting was back in 2017 at the Moscow Open which Kasatkina won in straight sets. A year later in Indian Wells, Siniakova had to retire midway through their second round tie. Their most recent meeting was last year at the same tournament and at the same stage.

On that occasion, Kasatkina won a close three-setter to progress.

Siniakova Stuns Kerber, Ends Losing Streak

Siniakova was desperately out of form going into her first-round match against higher-ranked Kerber. The 24-year-old had gone out of the opening rounds in three consecutive tournaments since the season resumed.

Overall Siniakova had lost five out of the previous six matches and was desperate to end the losing run.

But going back to the comforts of the clay courts seemed to have helped her. She was impressive and flawless on the day to record a straight-set win over world number 22. Now she will be looking to avenge the loss she suffered to Kasatkina at the same stage here in Rome from last year.

Apart from the recent struggles, the Czech has had a few decent runs mixed with multiple early-round exits. She started the season three consecutive first-round exits.

She had a decent run at Dubai where she reached the round of 16 having started from the qualifying rounds. Her best showing was at the Macha Lake Open where she reached the finals.

Siniakova’s career-best ranking is 31 and she will be hoping to put in some consistent performances over the next few weeks to rise up from her current rank of 61 and break into the top 50 again.

Kasatkina Aiming to Rediscover Old Form

Less than a couple of years ago, Kasatkina had broken into the top 10 rankings for the first time in her career. She was also the highest-ranked Russian on the tour, won Kremlin Cup in front of the home crowd and reached the finals at the Indian Wells. There were even suggestions that she could be the next first time Grand Slam winner in the women’s game.

But injuries, loss of form and change of coaching personnel meant that her form over the next 18 months has been below par. She has now dropped to 74 in the world ranking and has only won 26 matches in the last two seasons combined. In 2018 itself she had won 42 matches alone.

Kasatkina did show signs of getting back to her best at the Lyon Open just before the season was suspended. She had reached the semi-finals. Post the season resumed she has played four matches in the main draws of the events and has only managed to win once. Her first-round win over world number 178 Vera Zvonareva came as a huge sigh of relief. Hopefully, now she can kick on and find some form ahead of the French Open.

Siniakova v Kasatkina Prediction & Tip

Both the players are coming into this match on a similar note. They have had poor runs leading up to this tournament and their first-round wins were crucial to both. Unfortunately for one of them, however, the first-round win could prove to be a false dawn. Kasatkina will start as a favourite considering she has been playing well this week and has had a few wins under her belt coming from the qualifying stage.

Tip: Kasatkina to win in straight sets: 5/4 (bet365)
