Matteo Berrettini v Stefano Travaglia Head to Head

This will be a first-ever meeting between these two players at tour level, but remarkably it is Travaglia who has a commanding winning record from the ITF circuit, winning all three matches they have played at that level.

Berrettini On Point in Win over Coria

Matteo Berrettini remained as consistent and as composed as ever as he dismissed the challenge of Argentina’s Federico Coria in the second round on Wednesday. Under the baking heat of Foro Italico, Berrettini kicked off his 2020 clay-court campaign in style, firing seven aces and winning an incredible 31 out of 34 points behind his first serve.

The 24-year-old who hails from Rome, is fresh from a US Open fourth round showing, reaching the second week at Flushing Meadows for the second straight year. However, that remains his only major highlight of a subpar year for the Italian power-hitter.

Berreittini, seeded fourth this week, had only played in one tournament on tour in 2020 before the tour was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. That was the Australian Open in January where he lost in the second round to Tennys Sandgren. However, his tough start to the year was largely impacted by an undisclosed injury which saw him miss the ATP Cup and the South American clay-court swing.

He is still the focus of home hopes and will certainly be motivated to end the year on a high and earn a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals in November for the second year running.

Travaglia Primed to Keep Up Winning Streak

On Tuesday, a record eight Italians reached the second round in Rome, with the 18-year-old teenager Lorenzo Musetti pulling off the biggest upset of the day in beating Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam winner. For Stefano Travaglia, his success was largely overshadowed having registered his very own upset on Monday in beating world no.28 Taylor Fritz.

Travaglia’s first match win on the clay-courts of Rome was followed by another, as he beat US Open quarter-finalist Borna Coric 7-6 7-5 in two hours and 25 minutes. He has now won five of his past seven matches dating back to the Prostejov Challenger in Czech Republic last week where he was a beaten semifinalist.

Travaglia’s impressive results this season have once again been achieved at the Challenger tour where he made a final in Bendigo, and a pair of semifinals in Bengaluru and Prostejov.

The 28-year-old has now produced his best result at Masters 1000 level where he will meet fellow compatriot Matteo Berrettini. Can he keep up that winning form by recording his biggest career result by far on Friday?

Berrettini v Travaglia Prediction & Tip

There will be some brutal hitting in this encounter as both players like to get to the ball off the ground with venom. Expect shorter rallies and very few breaks of serve.

Tip: Over 21.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
