Denis Shapovalov v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

Two previous meetings between Shapovalov and Humbert have been split between the two, both of which coming in the last 15 months or so. In the first on clay at the Lyon Open last year, Shapovalov needed three sets to get past Humbert before the Frenchman defeated him in straight sets at the Auckland Open earlier this year.

Confident Shapovalov’s Already Emulated His Best

Having reached the third round at the 2018 Rome Masters, Shapovalov has not wasted any time in getting through to that stage already this year. And it comes on the back of a confidence-instilling run to the quarterfinal of the US Open, his first ever appearance in the last eight of a Grand Slam.

And while the surfaces, the one at Flushing Meadows and here in Rome are like chalk and cheese, confidence is a strange thing. For now, Shapovalov looks like he believes he can win anything and despite playing on a surface he doesn’t like too much going by his record, he has recorded back to back straight set wins already.

It started with 6-2, 6-3 drubbing of Guido Pella in which the latter was a mild favourite before he crushed Pedro Martinez, the 109th-ranked Spaniard in straight sets again.

Now to see if he can make it to his second quarterfinal appearance at a clay court Masters event following a Madrid semifinal in 2018.

Auckland Winner Humbert Stuns Fognini

Now Fabio Fognini is a Masters winner himself but everyone who watched him play in Kitzbuhel would agree he looked anything but that. The rustiness was there for all to see.

What one expected Fognini to do is to shrug that and get going in this Rome Masters, his home competition and build on to that performance last year which saw him pocket the Monte-Carlo Masters. As it turned out, he fought hard but proved to be no match to Humbert, who registered his second successive straight-set win on clay.

This was also just the second match the Auckland Open winner had played on clay this season following on from a 24-24 win-loss record across all tiers of tournaments on this surface.

Earlier in the tournament, Humbert had announced himself with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Kevin Anderson in the first set and now faces a big test. The pressure, however, would be off the Frenchman’s shoulders because he has already notched up his best Masters performance having never gone beyond round one at any previous competition.

Shapovalov v Humbert Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov will be a favourite here and we are probably looking at a straight-set win for the Canadian given once he gets on a roll he typically doesn’t stop there.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
