Cilic Sends out Goffin
Despite starting out as a rank outsider in their second round match, Cilic turned out to be an easy winner over David Goffin. The Croat won 6-2, 6-2 to march into the third round, only for the second time in his last 11 appearances at Masters tournaments.
Cilic had earlier started out the competition with a scrappy, three-set victory against Alexander Bublik but that didn’t bother him too much against Goffin. He needed just 70 minutes but more importantly was never under pressure, never facing a break-point in the encounter to notch up his second win over his Belgian counterpart at this event.
The former world number three has traditionally done better on hard courts and grass but in more recent times, has seen a change in his approach and results on clay as well. His best performance at the French Open, for instance, came in 2017 and 2018 when he reached the quarterfinals at those editions.
Cilic has also made the semifinal at the Rome Masters in 2018, and in the same year he was also a quarterfinalist at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Can he now get to the last eight stage here too?

Ruud in Line for First Big Quarterfinal Berth
Norway’s Ruud won his first ATP title earlier this year when he won the ATP Buenos Aires in February. He was building up to a nice momentum as he reached the Santiago Open final as well but soon after the tour was called off and while Ruud did feature in the Thiem’s 7 Invitational competition too, there wasn’t too much between then and the start of the season for the world number 34.
Starting out with a first round loss at the Cincinnati Open, Ruud delivered a career-best third round showing at the US Open after that but what he’s eyeing for right now is to go where he’s never been before.
Since having started out in 2015, Ruud’s best showing across all the majors and masters competition has been third round – a feat he has achieved multiple times without too much further success. With wins over Karen Khachanov and Lorenzo Sonego in the first two rounds here, he will give himself a better shot of getting through against a solid player but one who hasn’t always been at his best on clay.
Marin Cilic v Casper Ruud Prediction & Tip
While Cilic has the experience, he is a second favourite here with bet365 offering 13/10 for his victory. Ruud, however, is a more solid player on clay and while Cilic might stretch him, all roads are pointing towards the Norwegian to make his maiden quarterfinal.
Tip: Ruud to win: 8/13 (bet365)
