Simona Halep v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

There has been one previous encounter between Halep and Putintseva and the world number two had won it. This was played earlier this year at the Australian Open with Halep coming through easily in straight sets.

Halep Overturns Yastremska’s Strong Start

Things did not look very bright at the start for Halep who was playing Dayana Yastremska in the third round, as the Ukrainian raced off to a 3-0 lead in the first set. The Romanian retaliated with a power-packed performance to win the next three games including 12 points out of the next 13 to level things as the two players then battled it out to get to 5-5.

Halep broke in the 11th game after getting three opportunities to do so and served out the set to go one up.

In the second set, the scorelines were reversed with Halep taking the early advantage and a 3-0 lead. Yastremska made a late attempt for a fightback but Halep always held that extra break to wrap up the set and match 7-5, 6-4 to move into the last eight stage.

With this win, Halep is now 7-0 on clay this year having earlier ended Jasmine Paolini’s run in the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the second round. This had followed a five-match winning streak at Prague that had enabled her to lift her second WTA title of the season following the win in Dubai.

Putintseva Comes Back from the Dead

Playing fellow Kazakh Elena Rybakina, Putintseva looked like her run in the Italian Open was all but over when she fell a set and 5-2 behind to her. And then, out of nowhere, she clawed her way back to shock the 10th seeded Rybakina No.10 seed Elena Rybakina 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 and set up this meeting with Halep.

Putintseva was a point away from going down 5-1 in the second set in fact but turned things around, leaving her hapless opponent groping for answers she didn’t find in the final set.

This followed an equally gritty victory over another favourite in the second round of the tournament, when she defeated Petra Martic in three sets. Putintseva had won 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 and with this win against her fellow Kazakh, she has now reached her first ever WTA Premier 5 last-eight round.

The world number 30 can expect to improve on her rankings with this performance but if she wants to get herself to be a serious contender in women’s tennis, a solid showing against Halep would go a long way. And for that, Putintseva would need to overcome her inability to break her opponent, after she missed 15 of the 18 break-points she had in the match.

Halep v Putintseva Prediction & Tip

Halep has won seven matches in a row and an eighth one looks almost certain and while Putintseva’s fighting capabilities could push the Romanian, what she would need is to be at her punishing best whenever she gets a chance. In the absence of that clinical finishing, we can expect a straight-set win for Halep again.

Tip: Halep to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
