Elina Svitolina v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between Svitolina and Vondrousova, and all three of them have resulted in wins for the Ukrainian. In their first meeting in 2018 in Doha, Svitolina romped to a 6-2, 6-4 win before she made it 2-0 when Vondrosouva retired from the final set at the Stuttgart Open. More recently, she made it 3-0 at the Indian Wells Open of 2019.

Svitolina Comes Through the Kuznetsova Test

As Svitolina herself admitted after her third round match against Svetlana Kuznetova, she expected the Russian to put up a brave fight as is usually the case while playing the Russian. Which is why Svitolina would take a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over Kuznetsova who has been a two-time Grand Slam champion anyway.

Svitolina scored over Kuznetsova as she attacked on the opposition’s serve, winning 60% of the Russian’s second serve. This was after they shared a couple of early breaks of serves in the opening set before Kuznetsova had a chance to break her opponent at 5-5. Kuznetsova floundered from 15-40 to lose the game, very soon taking it to the tie-breaker.

It was only off the fifth set point she got did Svitolina finally wrapped up the set.

There were early breaks of serves exchanged yet again but it was the fifth game of the set which proved to be decisive. Svitolina broke again and never allowed her Russian opponent to make a comeback, winning in straight sets.

Earlier, Svitolina had needed a tie-breaker to overcome Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in another straight-setter in the second round following a first round bye.

Vondrousova in a Thrill-a-Minute Ride

It looked like just another day of women’s tennis with the unseeded Polona Hercog having taken the the first set 6-1. A few moments later Vondrousova stormed back like a champ she would have wanted to be after reaching the final the French Open last season.

And when Vondrousova broke her opponent early in the third set, to go 3-0 up, the writing seemed to be on the wall for Hercog.

Only issue with that, Hercog hadn’t read that writing. She fought back to 4-2 and then broke Vondrousova in the seventh game of the set, before levelling things off at 4-4. It was a game in which she herself faced two break-points but came through in the end.

And then Vondrousova was broken at 5-5 to let Hercog serve out the match but she appeared to be circumspect at that time with the bravado having dissipated. Which is when Vondrousova made it 6-6 and in the tie-breaker, with Hercog unable to take any advantage while serving at 5-4, the Czech player sealed off the match.

She had earlier defeated Misaki Doi and Arantxa Rus in straight sets, but this match against Hercog has tested in ways it could get difficult when she plays a top player. Like Svitolina.

Elina Svitolina v Marketa Vondrousova Prediction & Tip

This should be a win for Svitolina except Vondrousova is slowly getting back into her groove. Which could lead to a fighting match that goes to the third.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
