Roberto Bautista Agut v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head
This is the fourth meeting between both players. Agut leads the head-to-head 2-1. Interestingly, they have met once on each of hard court, clay and grass. All their meetings have gone to a deciding final set. Their last meeting was won by the Georgian in 2019 in Dubai, but Agut won their only meeting on clay in 2017 at the Monte Carlo ATP 1000.

Agut Looking To Return to Consistent Tennis Ways
Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut was off the tour for a week after the US Open, as he is a newly turned father, with his wife giving birth last week.
He has been among the more consistent players on the tour in the last season and a half. 2019 was a phenomenal season for Agut, breaking into the top ten in the ATP rankings, being a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, and winning the Davis Cup title for Spain.
2020 got off to a strong start, with him winning all his matches at the ATP Cup, but an unexpected third round loss to Marin Cilic brought about a drop in form through the rest of the season until the pandemic break.
Agut returned to the tour in good form at the Western & Southern Open, defeating Daniil Medvedev at the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open and being two points from victory, serving for the match in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic.
The Spaniard looked in good touch coming into the US Open, and looked good for a deep run, till he gave up a two set to one lead against Vasik Pospisil for a surprise third round exit.
Agut will be looking for a strong return to clay and getting himself into form ahead of the French Open in a week from now.

Two Time Defending Champion Faces Most Difficult Draw
Nikoloz Basilashvili is one of the most prominent athletes to hail from Georgia and more importantly, is the two time defending champion here in Hamburg. However, given Hamburg’s usual spot on the calendar (after the French Open and Wimbledon), vis-a-visa this calendar year (week before the French Open), calls for a considerably more stacked draw this time around.
Basilashvili put up a good performance in 2019, defeating Next Gen front-runners Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev en route the title. An elbow injury towards the end of 2019 derailed his momentum, and even though he was passed fit to begin the year at the ATP Cup, he was slow off the blocks.
He has won only four matches this year, and his return since the pandemic has not been encouraging with early losses on the US hard courts and is also yet to get into any winning form on the European clay either.
Two of Basilashvili’s career titles have come on clay (both in Hamburg), and is generally at his best on clay. The added pressure of going for a third consecutive title will be there, but so should the confidence on being back on the Hamburg clay.
Agut v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip
This makes for a very unexpected round one, but the presence of many big names and Basilashvili’s poor run of late, all are contributing factors. Agut starts as favorite, given how both their recent forms have been, but the Georgian does seem to do his best here, and thus cannot be discounted either.
A close encounter ahead of us, but expect Agut to prevail in a decider.
Tip: Agut to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
