Denis Shapovalov v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

This will be for the first time that Shapovalov and Schwartzman face off in a competitive encounter.

Shapovalov Gets Past Grigor

Coming into this tournament in Rome, Shapovalov hadn’t played a single match on clay this year. And what he had done over the past four seasons on this surface wouldn’t have given him lot of confidence.

A three-year period between 2017 and 2019 had seen the Canadian win nine and lost 15 matches on clay including one season in which he featured in four tournaments and lost in the opening round at all. Shapovalov has surely come a long way since there because he has reversed that 0-4 record that year to enter the semifinal of the Italian Open competition with a 4-0 win-loss ratio on clay this season.

The wins have come over Guido Pella and Pedro Martinez in straight sets in the first two rounds before he defeated Ugo Humbert in the third round in a gruelling three-setter. This set up a meeting with Grigor Dimitrov, whom he has looked up growing up because Shapovalov admitted he loved the Bulgarian’s style.

And for a moment when Dimitrov came back into their encounter by pocketing the second set, it looked like Shapovalov would have a task on hand. However, the Canadian wrapped up this match in three to give himself not just a shot in the final but also a chance to break into the top 10 of the rankings.

Can he stop his opponent, who would be riding sky-high following his success.

Schwartzman Stuns Nadal!

Here is player who had never beaten Rafael Nadal in nine previous meetings. Forget beating Nadal, Schwartzman had won just two sets in those matches and with Nadal starting out at 1/40 to win their quarterfinal it was quite evident why it was generally thought the Spaniard had no business losing this encounter.

Schwartzman, however, pulled off a beauty, breaking Nadal five times in the match.

He shocked Nadal 6-2, 7-5 to march into his second successive Italian Open semifinal, the only Masters tournament he has ever made that far. The Argentine, who was a semifinalist here in Rome even last season, got off to a rollicking start and while he struggled to hold his own serve in the second, he kept breaking Nadal to achieve the victory.

Now, Schwartzman has the chance to go one better by entering his second ATP final.

Shapovalov v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

Schwartman has a very good chance of entering the final here with a record that he has on clay. While he would find it difficult to maintain that same intensity he had shown against Nadal, Schwartzman has a good chance to win this in straight sets.

Tip: Schwartzman to win: 4/7 (bet365)
