Andrey Rublev v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

2019 Finalist Rublev Needs Clay Prep

Andrey Rublev had reached the final of this competition last season before falling to Nikoloz Basilashvili, which means he doesn’t have too much he can gain from this in terms of ranking points – unless obviously he wins the title. Which is why it’s safe to believe Rublev is looking at this tournament in Hamburg to try and garner some practice in the lead-up to the French Open.

The Russian did not have the happiest outing at the Rome Masters, falling to Hubert Hurkacz in the second round in a tough three-setter. That followed on from a confident showing at the US Open where he reached the quarterfinal but it’s one thing to go deep in a tournament on hard courts, quite another to repeat that within a span of three weeks on clay.

And forget going deep in the French Open Rublev hasn’t even got past the first round there so far in his career.

To be fair to Rublev, he had participated in matches on clay during the pandemic as well, featuring in the Adria Tour and then the Thiem’s 7 Invitational competition. He won all three of his matches at the former and lifted the latter title, beating Dominic Thiem in the final.

Can he replicate that kind of success over the next three weeks as well?

Sandgren Makes it Through the Qualifiers

A couple of straight-set wins in the qualifiers earned the 49th-ranked Sandgren a place in the main draw and much like Rublev, the aim is to get some necessary preparation under his belt before Roland-Garros.

Because like Rublev, the American has struggled at the French Open in the past. In his four previous attempts at playing there, Sandgren has never made it past the first round. And it’s not too dissimilar at the Masters competitions either, with first round exits at each of the three, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome, which are played on red dirt.

Which is why it’s interesting to note Sandgren has been playing a few tournaments on clay at the lower level and his most recent title at those levels came on red dirt too. Earlier this year, he won the Altec Styslinger Tennis Exhibition, having also lifted the Savannah Challenger last year on clay.

This will be an uphill battle against Rublev though, having struggled in the opener at Rome as well. Sandgren will hope he can put up a solid fight though.

Rublev v Sandgren Prediction and Tip

While Rublev is a favourite here at 1/4, this might not be the easiest win of this career. A fighting Sandgren can be expected to make him give a run for his money.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
