Elina Svitolina v Magda Linette Head to Head

This will be just the second time Svitolina and Linette face off in a competitive match. In their first encounter which came in the 2017 French Open, Svitolina was a straight-set winner over her opponent to make it to the fourth round.

Svitolina Made Quarterfinal in Rome

While Elina Svitolina was sent packing in the end by Marketa Vondrousova at the Italian Open last week, she would be pleased to have made the quarterfinal there. That was despite it being the first ever competitive tournament she had played since the pandemic broke out, having opted out of the US Open series.

Also because in the last season Svitolina really struggled to get going on red dirt, having lost her openers at Madrid and Rome and reaching the third round at the French Open before Garbine Muguruza brushed her aside in straight sets.

This isn’t to say Svitolina doesn’t like playing on clay, no, far from it. In fact, four of her 14 WTA titles have come on clay including two at Rome (2017 and 2018). To add to that, Svitolina has also defeated players like Venus Williams, Angelique Kerber, Muguruza, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova and Sloane Stephens, all of whom are top clay-courters in their own right.

Svitolina will look to fine-tune her French Open preparations with at least a couple of wins here and she starts off after an opening bye with an opener against the 35th-ranked Pole.

Linette’s Played Substantial Tennis Since Return

Linette has been involved in five of the seven tournament-weeks of tennis since the return from suspension, and while she has performed modestly in those, there hasn’t been any impacting performance so far.

Sure she made it to the third round at the US Open, and defeated Jelena Ostapenko at the Italian Open but stringing together wins has been an issue for a player who added a third WTA title to her name earlier this year.

It was a slightly depleted field alright but Linette went into the pandemic break with a title victory at Hua Hin, but since then a second round loss at Lexington Open, first round defeat at the Cincinnati Open and another second round ouster in Rome have made it tough for her to gain any momentum.

Here in Strasbourg, she defeated Pauline Parmentier in the first round, winning 6-4, 6-3 to seal her match-up against Svitolina. Might not be as easy come round two.

Svitolina v Linette Prediction & Tip

Svitolina is an overwhelming favourite here, starting out at 1/3 and we reckon given the way she showed no signs of rust in her first competition in Rome last week, she could well win this in straight sets.

Tip: Svitolina to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
