Elena Rybakina v Alize Cornet Head to Head

There has been just one previous outing between these two players and it came at the Hobart International earlier this year. Rybakina, ranked 18th right now, was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Cornet in that match.

Rybakina Struggling for Consistency Since Return

A first round exit in the first tournament she played after returning from the pandemic break could be put down to rustiness, having not played a single exhibition match in that period. However, a second round defeat at the US Open for Rybakina only added to the misery of a player who was on such a roll before tennis went on a break.

Shifting to clay after her brief stint in Flushing Meadows, Rybakina did put up a couple of strong showings in Rome – beating Ekaterina Alexandrova and Marie Bouzkova – but frustration followed her in round three when she frittered away a solid start. Leading by a set and 5-2 up in the second, Rybakina fell away in spectacular fashion to crash out of the competition in three sets.

Needing to get a little more practice under her belt before the French Open, the world number 18 opted to feature in Strasbourg and has started off with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Greet Minnen in the first round – something we had envisaged as well.

Question now is whether she can storm into the quarterfinals to give herself some sort of consistency to look at for the upcoming event in Roland Garros.

Cornet Consistent After Pandemic Break

Having featured in a string of tournaments on hard court surfaces during the pandemic break, Alize Cornet looks to have shunned the inconsistencies that she had shown in recent times. It had been those very losses which had seen the former world number 11 plummet to 51st in the world.

Since the return in August though, Cornet made a respectable third round at the Cincinnati Open and then stormed into the fourth round at the US Open as well. A victory in round three over the former US Open runnerup Madison Keys was the highlight of her campaign there before she went down to Tsvetana Pironkova in the fourth round.

With four of her six WTA titles coming on clay, Cornet is no stranger to solid performances on this surface and that was on display in her first round win here as well. She ran off to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Polona Hercog despite playing her first clay court match of the season – Hercog had already featured in a few and was a slight favourite heading into the encounter.

Cornet’s form makes this an interesting match-up for a place in the quarterfinal where one of them will face Zhang Shuai or Clara Burel.

Rybakina v Cornet Prediction & Tip

While Rybakina starts off a favourite at 4/9. things might be as straightforward as that for and we believe Cornet can be expected to win at least a set here.

Tip: Cornet to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (bet365)
