Aryna Sabalenka v Anna Blinkova Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players, but that came at the ITF level in 2017 where Sabalenka needed three sets to get past her opponent.

Sabalenka Wastes No Time in Round One

That Sabalenka won her opening round match wasn’t that big a surprise given she was playing a 239th-ranked Ellen Perez. The bigger question, however, comes now. Can she break her second match loss hoodoo.

Since the resumption of tennis in August, this is Sabalenka’s fourth tennis tournament and in each of her previous three, she has won the first match she has played in it and then lost the second. At Lexington the defeat came at the hands of Cori Gauff, then Jessica Pegula defeated her in the Cincinnati Open before a punishing loss at the hands of fellow Belarusian at the US Open.

It was not always like that though. Sabalenka had made the semifinal at the Adelaide International earlier this year and then followed it up with a title win in Doha, where she defeated Anett Kontaveit, Maria Sakkari and Petra Kvitova as well.

Clay isn’t Sabalenka’s forte though, so things could get interesting here as well despite playing against someone who has never been a top-50 player in her career.

Blinkova Continues on from Rome Good Form

Blinkova’s record in the first three tournaments she played following the break was as follows: four matches played, one won. One of those three losses even came in the qualifiers, leaving her with a dented confidence.

Or so one thought anyway.

Come the Italian Open, Blinkova was forced to go through the qualifiers once again but the draw had her play just one qualifying round. She won that to make it to the main draw where she shocked Jil Teichmann and then overcame Aliona Bolsova to set up a third round meeting with Karolina Pliskova.

And while she lost 6-4, 6-3, Blinkova’s dropping morale might have been lifted.

She has opted to feature in another clay court tournament before the French Open and started off with a 6-1, 6-2 rout of Myrtille Georges but the change in quality is going to be drastic come the second round. Can she withstand Sabalenka’s booming groundstrokes?

Sabalenka v Blinkova Prediction & Tip

Sabalenka is 2/5 to win this but don’t discount Blinkova out yet. Expecting her to clinch a set and push it to three.

Tip: Blinkova to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (bet365)
