Zhang Shuai v Clara Burel Head to Head

This will be the first time ever Zhang Shuai and Clara Burel will face off in a competitive encounter.

Burel Wins Maiden Main Draw Match

19-year-old Burel is a two-time junior singles Grand Slam runnerup, having achieved that at the 2018 Australian Open and US Open. Since then she has been playing at the ITF level with the odd wild-card on the WTA tour helping her a main draw appearance.

Armed with one lower-level title earlier this year, her first round appearance at this Strasbourg Open was just her fourth, having participated at the Australian Open and Limoges in 2019 and then again in Lyon earlier this year. Each time, Burel lost in the first round.

Not this time though.

The 433rd-ranked Frenchwoman collected her first WTA main draw victory when she overturned a set deficit against Kateryna Bondarenko, to clinch a three-set win.

It might be expecting too much for her to replicate that success but up against her is a player who has typically struggled on clay. Her youthful energy could give her an edge here.

Shuai Comes Through Two Tough Rounds

China’s world number 40 Shuai needed to come through a qualifier to make it to the main draw and she needed three sets to overcome Storm Sanders. This was followed by an opening round encounter against Ajla Tomljanovic, in which Shuai overturned a one-set deficit to edge out her Aussie counterpart and set up this meeting.

Shuai had earlier lost in the opening round of the Italian Open to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, which was her third successive defeat since resumption. First round losses at the Cincinnati Open and US Open had earlier been put down to rustiness, having not played a single exhibition match during the break.

The good news, therefore, for Shuai is she has now won back to back matches to regain some of the momentum she would need going into the French Open. The not so good news is her record on clay which leaves much to desire.

For instance, last season, Shuai won and lost five matches apiece on clay, while it was 6-6 in 2018. Interestingly, those were her best results on this surface since 2013, which was the last time Shuai had a positive win-loss record.

Shuai v Burel Prediction & Tip

Shuai Zhang starts out at 2/5 to win this, while Burel is 7/4 – the gulf in the rankings justify this difference. Still think Burel could be up for the match and push the match to a fighting third set.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
