Fabio Fognini v Casper Ruud Head to Head

There has been one match played between Fognini and Ruud before this and that came earlier this year. Ruud clinched that encounter in the ATP Cup, beating his Italian opponent 6-2, 6-2.

2013 Champion Fognini Finally Wins One

Fognini resumed the tour in Kitzbuhel after missing on the American swing and came off second best in his opening match against the virtually unknown Marc-Andrea Huesler. That he won just three games was equal parts surprising and understandable given he hadn’t played any tennis in the six months leading up to that match.

Ugo Humbert did not give Fognini much of a chance in the Italian’s second match post the pandemic break, beating him 7-5, 7-6 to oust him out of the Rome Masters. And when Fognini dropped the first set of his opening round match in Hamburg to Philipp Kohlschreiber, things looked to have spiralled out of control for the world number 15.

That was also when the adrenaline seemed to have kicked in and the fighting spirit came out to the fore as Fognini came away a winner in three sets to finally register his first victory of the post-pandemic break.

He now takes on a tougher opponent in Ruud, a player knocking on the doors of the top 25 of the ATP rankings at the moment. Can Fognini step up on the gas?

Ruud Adding on to the Rome Semifinal

After winning his first ever ATP title earlier this season, Ruud also made it to the final of the very next tournament he played – both of which came on clay. However, a first round exit at the Cincinnati Masters earlier in August meant Ruud had to return to the drawing board to come up with new plans.

Seems like those new plans might be working as he first reached the third round at the US Open, the first time he has gotten that far on a non-clay majors or Masters tournament.

And with that confidence under his belt and clay under his shoes, Ruud displayed immense solidity and pedigree to march into the Rome Masters semifinal. Wins over Karen Khachanov in round one, Marin Cilic in the third and Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal meant he had a chance to take on Novak Djokovic in the last stage.

While Ruud did push the world number one, Djokovic proved to be too good and came away a winner.

Ruud was leading 6-4, 2-0 in the first round against Benoit Paire when his opponent retired from their match to leave the Norwegian taking on Fognini in this match.

Fognini v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Ruud’s a favourite despite Fognini’s the better-ranked player – the Norwegian has form going his way and while Fognini might have shrugged off any rust by now, he still doesn’t look at his nimble best, which could be Ruud’s best chance to win.

Tip: Ruud to win: 6/4 (bet365)
