Aryna Sabalenka v Katerina Siniakova Head to Head

There has been no previous outing between Sabalenka and Siniakova.

Sabalenka Overturns First Set Breadstick

There was a general sense it might not be an easy match for Sabalenka but the manner in which she lost the first set it looked like it was going to be far worse for her in her second round encounter against Anna Blinkova. Blinkova raced away to a 4-0 lead and wrapped it up 6-1 to take a set lead in the match.

And even when Sabalenka did break her opponent in the second set, she was broken back, with the score at 3-3 at one stage in the second set. It was at this, sort of midway point in the match, where Sabalenka showed first signs of wresting the initiative by first breaking Blinkova for the second time and then serving it out.

The third set proved to one-way traffic in the end after Sabalenka saved an early break-point, breaking Blinkova twice to wrap it up 6-2.

This followed a straightforward win over Ellen Perez in the first round in what is Sabalenka’s first clay court tournament of the season, having also not played at all during the pandemic break.

She now has a very good chance of making it to the semifinal, which incidentally would only be her third of her career in a WTA tournament on clay!

Siniakova Sends out Alexandrova

A straight-set rout of Ekaterina Alexandrova has put Siniakova in the quarterfinal of this competition, with the Czech world number 62 having won this 6-2, 6-4. A break of serve in the very second game of the match soon saw her go 3-0 up before she broke her Russian opponent a second time to wrap up the set easily.

In the second, Siniakova had three break-points in the second game again which Alexandrova managed to ward off and then she herself faced one at 4-4 before breaking the Russian in the 10th game to pocket the match in straight sets.

Siniakova, who had needed three sets in her first round match to beat Bernarda Pera, is coming off a second round appearance at the Italian Open. That was the first win of the season for Siniakova, who had lost in the opening rounds at Prague, Cincinnati Open and the US Open as well.

Incidentally, against Pera, after losing the first set, Siniakova had blown away a 4-0 lead and another chance to serve it out at 6-5 in the second before clinching the tie-breaker. Can she show this much fight against Sabalenka as well?

Sabalenka v Siniakova Prediction & Tip

Sabalenka is a Strasbourg semifinalist from the previous season and starts off at 2/5 to win this one. She should make it there but it might not be a straightforward win.

Tip: Sabalenka to win: 2/5 (bet365)
