Stefanos Tsitsipas v Pablo Cuevas Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players and Tsitsipas has won both of them. The second of these matches came at the Estoril Open final last year in which Tsitsipas defeated Cuevas 6-3, 7-6 to lift the second of his three titles in the season.

Tsitsipas Imperious in Evans Pounding

The Greek player needed less than an hour to get the better of Daniel Evans in his first round match, winning 6-3, 6-1 to set up this second round meeting.

Having not had the greatest starts to the season resumption with just a semifinal at the Cincinnati Open to show for his effort so far, Tsitsipas would have gone into the tournament knowing he had to brush off his opening loss at Rome last week. With the French Open only a few days away, this tournament was as much about getting into rhythm on clay as it is about notching up some confidence-inducting wins.

The top seed Daniil Medvedev was unable to do that, losing easily to Ugo Humbert but if one thought Tsitsipas was going to go down the same road, they were mistaken. The world number six faced just one break point in the entire match and saved it easily, while breaking his opponent four times in total to ease into round two.

Having made it as far as the fourth round at the French Open last year, Tsitsipas would dearly love to better that especially after his third round exit at the US Open. And he would look at this tournament in Hamburg to give him that early impetus to set the ball rolling.

Veteran Cuevas Wins Main Draw Match in a While

Having made it as far as the quarterfinal at both the Cordoba Open and the Buenos Aires Open, Cuevas had gone into a bit of a lull as far as winning main draw matches was concerned. Opening defeats at the Rio Open and Santiago Open before the pandemic break and early losses at both, the Cincinnati Open and US Open would have left him slightly flummoxed.

Cuevas opted to feature in the Aix en Provence Challenger competition a week ago where he reached the quarterfinal but his real test was to come here in an ATP competition in Hamburg. And starting out in the qualifiers, the 34-year-old came through to first make the main draw and then defeated Taylor Fritz in the first round to set up this meeting with the Greek.

Having made it to the final at this competition in 2016, Cuevas will hope to put up a fight against Tsitsipas but things could get nasty if his opponent shows the same kind of touch he did in the first round.

Tsitsipas v Cuevas Prediction and Tip

This should be a straightforward one for Tsitsipas who could wrap this up in two easy sets.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
