Halep Aiming for World Number One
Simona Halep has been both, a French Open winner and a world number one in the past. In this competition she will be aiming for both, yet again and in order to be one, she will have to do the other – win her second title at Roland-Garros and she usurps Ash Barty as the women’s world number one.
And while winning seven pressure matches at a Grand Slam is never a given, if there’s a kind of form you would like to enter a major with, it’s what Halep has exhibited since the pandemic break.
Here’s a player who did not play a single match during the pandemic break. She also opted out of the US Open series, missing a chance to clinch a title or two at Lexington, Cincinnati Open or the US Open. And yet, on either side of those tournaments she missed, Halep won two tournaments on clay.
The world number two started off at Prague where she shrugged off rust to come through easily by the end against the other in-form player Elise Mertens in the final. And then at the Italian Open which followed the US Open, Halep dropped just one set – to Garbine Muguruza in the semifinal to lift the title.
She starts off her French Open with a 14-0 win-loss record since her Australian Open semifinal exit, and will face a relatively easy opening round encounter.

Sorribes Tormo Loves Clay Too
It’s unfortunate Sara Sorribes Tormo has run into Halep this early in the competition because the Spaniard has made her mark on clay at her own level. With a career-best ranking of 64th in the world, Sorribes Tormo will hope she can continue with her red dirt form going into this tournament opener.
This year itself, inclusive of all the tournaments including the exhibition ones, Sorribes Tormo has a 16-3 record on clay. To get some rhythm going after missing out on the Italian Open, Sorribes Tormo played at an ITF competition last week where she defeated five players to lift the Cagnes-Sur-Mer title, without dropping a set.
Having begun her post-pandemic season in Palermo where she lost her opener, Sorribes Tormo went on to make it to the quarterfinals at the Prague Open, and a second round at both, the US Open and Istanbul Open.
Unfortunately for her, her career-best showing of second round at Roland-Garros looks a distant dream for now.
Halep v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip
Halep will be a heavy favourite here and should win this in straight sets. Question is whether she can do it quickly enough with minimum damage inflicted on self.
Tip: Halep to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
