Bertens Resumption in Tatters

The Dutchwoman who is seeded fifth in this tournament, enters her seventh French Open on the back of almost negligible confidence. Having played just two matches on the exhibition circuit, Bertens featured in her first tournament in Rome last week and was pumelled in her very first match – a second round encounter after an opening bye – by Polona Hercog.

Hercog won 6-4, 6-4 and while that defeat could be put down to rustiness, Bertens endured a second loss less than a week later. Featuring in the Strasbourg Open earlier this week, Bertens fell to Jelena Ostapenko.

What will be more worrying for Bertens is her injury due to which she had to retire in that Ostapenko match. Having taken a set lead against Ostapenko, she fell away in the third, where she was down 4-2 before having to call it quits in that match.

On the flip-side, Bertens is a French Open semifinalist from 2016, having beaten Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys to get to that stage as an unseeded player. And while she hasn’t done too much of note at Roland-Garros, she will hope to take some confidence from that showing four years ago.

Zavatska 0-3 Since Return

Things haven’t gone Zavatska’s way since she returned from the pandemic break, and three tournaments into the post-break season, she has played and lost three matches.

It began with a three-set loss at the hands of Kirsten Flipkens at the Cincinnati Open before she lost to Elena Rybakina in the first round of the US Open. And then changing tack to participate on clay, Zavatska was crushed by Paula Badosa in the first round of the Istanbul Open, winning just three games in the entire match.

The 112th-ranked Zavatska opted to then play at an ITF competition to get some of her form back and while she won her opener there in a fighting three-setter, the Ukrainian fell easily in the second round to Viktorija Golubic.

The silver lining is Zavatska loves playing on clay and at the lower circuit, holds a solid record on red dirt – her overall win-loss on it is 93-48. Can she put up some kind of a fight against Bertens?

Bertens v Zavatska Prediction and Tip

The Dutchwoman is a huge favourite here but having lost back to back matches and that easily since her return could push her back a tad. She should still win this but might need three sets to get past Zavatska.

Tip: Bertens to win in three sets: 10/3 (bet365)
