Serena Williams v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

This will be the second time Serena Williams and Kristie Ahn will be facing off in a competitive match with their first match having come as recently as the US Open last month. It was in the first round and Serena, after bit of a slow start had won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

Williams Hasn’t Played Much on Clay

Since going on her maternity leave, Serena Williams hasn’t played in too many competitive matches on clay and that will be her biggest challenge coming into the French Open this year. To be exact, Serena’s featured in seven matches, most of them at the French Open where she reached the fourth round in 2018 and third round in 2019 without going further in the tournament.

Make no mistake, the hunger is still very much intact. After all despite all her troubles at the US Open, and she didn’t look as comfortable as her best on multiple occasions on court during that competition, Serena managed to reach the semifinal. And had it not been for a stunning Victoria Azarenka comeback, she would have gotten closer to that elusive 24th Grand Slam title.

It has been elusive alright though.

Serena’s featured in nine Grand Slam competitions since returning from the birth of her daughter, made the final on four occasions and won no major titles. Making things worse is four different opponents have beaten her – Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep and Bianca Andreescu.

She has an easy opening round encounter in the form of Ahn, but she will need to dictate terms in it to send out an early message – she means business.

Ahn Yet to Win a Main Draw Encounter in 2020

USA’s Kristie Ahn shot to fame at the 2019 US Open where she won her first ever match at a Grand Slam and then went on to triple it – making the fourth round before losing to Elise Mertens.

A graduate from the Stanford University, Ahn shunned the corporate world to take to tennis more seriously, but has taken her time to get going.

And even after what seemed to be a breakout year in 2019, Ahn’s performances have taken a beating this season. She has featured in seven tournaments on the tour and is yet to win a main draw match in 2020.

This includes qualifying round losses at some of the competitions and opening defeats at the Australian Open, St. Petersburg Open (where she came through the qualifiers), the Lexington Open (again through the qualifiers) and the US Open where she went down fighting to Serena.

Unfortunately for her, Ahn hasn’t played a single match on clay at any level this year and faces the might of Serena yet again in an opener – a nearly sure-shot recipe for another first round defeat.

Serena v Ahn Prediction and Tip

Williams shouldn’t have too many worries in this one especially against an opponent whose record on hard courts is better than that on clay and yet, it’s not great on the former either. Another straight-set win for Williams.

Tip: Serena to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
