Casper Ruud v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came earlier this year at the Auckland Open and Humbert registered a three-set win over Ruud to make it to the second round on his way to winning the title.

Ruud Breaks into Top 30

When the ATP rankings get released next Monday, Casper Ruud would finally himself edging towards the top-25 mark even if he loses this match. If Ruud can go the distance from here on, there is a good chance he past the 25th rank in the world.

Before we can talk about winning the title though, Ruud will have to get past Humbert but given the Norwegian’s form that might not be such a big problem. Having reached the semifinal at the Rome Masters, he fell to Novak Djokovic in a couple of tight sets but his best work came in the lead-up to that encounter.

Ruud faced four difficult opponents on paper, each capable of defeating the Norwegian on their day. In the opener he stunned Karen Khachanov, then eased past Lorenzo Sonego, beat Marin Cilic before scraping past Matteo Berrettini from a set down in the quarterfinal.

And if one thought that was a mere fluke, he proved it otherwise with back to back easy wins. A first round victory over Benoit Paire was par for the course but when he brushed Fabio Fognini aside in straight sets in the second, there is a general thought we could be looking at a French Open dark horse here.

Humbert Himself on a Roll

If Ruud is on the verge of his career-best ATP ranking, Humbert himself is on a similar roll, having reached 41st in the world. And with a couple of wins here already, he could break into the top 40 for the first time next week.

What would make this performance doubly sweet is the manner in which he tamed Daniil Medvedev in his first round match. Humbert won 6-4, 6-3 to march into the second round and then repeated the showing against Jiri Vesely, clinching the match by the same scoreline.

Earlier this month, Humbert had also defeated Kevin Anderson and Fognini himself – basically the Italian has now lost to both these players in a matter of weeks! – before he fell to Denis Shapovalov in the third round.

What’s interesting to note here is the Frenchman doesn’t consider clay to be his most preferred surface, having won just one of his 10 Challenger and Futures title on it. Even earlier in the season, Humbert opted not to play the clay swing in South America but a solid showing here could make him re-think his own credentials on this surface.

Ruud v Humbert Prediction and Tip

Ruud is 4/9 to win this while Humbert starts at 7/4. And while we do expect a fighting match, we have our doubts over whether this goes into a third because of the Norwegian’s excellent form.

Tip: Ruud to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
