Konta Erratic Form a Worry

It’s been a lot of up and down in Johanna Konta’s results this season and the unfortunate bit is it’s a lot more down than up. There was a semifinal at the Monterrey Open in March, and there was another at the Cincinnati Open in August during the post-pandemic season.

But on either side of those results, the results have been underwhelming. Like, for instance, she had gone into that Monterrey Open with three successive opening round exits to contend with. And then there was another in the post-pandemic season opener in Lexington.

At the US Open again, Konta fell in the second round to Sorana Cirstea and while she began her clay court season with a bye and then beat Irina-Camelia Begu in the second, the Brit was soundly crushed by Garbine Muguruza in the next match.

Till the beginning of the clay court season last year, the surface hadn’t been one of Konta’s favourites. In the three seasons before that, she had been 7-12 on win-loss on clay, but all of a sudden Konta dished out a memorable set of performances on the surface.

She made the final in Rabat and Rome and with that kind of confidence under her belt, Konta went on reach the semifinal at Roland-Garros. With no such results this season on clay, Konta will have to take a lot out of those 2019 results but will know she is up against one of the biggest talents in the world of tennis today.

Gauff Looking for First French Open Win

She is 16 but has already had a couple of breakthrough performances. Gauff’s first such showing came at Wimbledon last year when she reached the fourth round and she repeated that at the Australian Open earlier this season.

And while Gauff was knocked out in round one at the US Open earlier this year, it looks like it’s going to be a matter of time before the American dishes out another of those top-notch tournament showings.

Gauff’s post-pandemic return has consisted of a semifinal at the Lexington Open in August but not much thereafter.

Opening round losses at the Cincinnati Open and US Open and a second round defeat at the Italian Open have meant she hasn’t had a lot of rhythm going. However, having clinched the junior French Open singles title here just three years ago, Gauff will have the confidence of knowing she can turn it on clay as well.

Tough opener in the offing.

Konta v Gauff Prediction and Tip

On paper this could go either way with both players having not had a great set of recent results but confidence from previous ones. We will refrain from calling a winner in this one but it looks like we could see a three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
