Muguruza Coming off an Excellent Italian Open Campaign
She didn’t make it to the finals of the Italian Open but if there was one player who could have come close to upsetting Simona Halep in that competition it was Muguruza. That Halep title win saw her win all but one of her matches without dropping a set and that sole match came against the Spaniard.
That, however, wasn’t all.
Muguruza didn’t have the kindest of draws in Rome, needing to overcome Sloane Stephens, Cori Gauff, Johanna Konta and the player in top form, Victoria Azarenka to reach the semifinals. And she did that in different ways – some were more straightforward, the others saw her needing to put up a fight, comeback from behind, and Muguruza showed signs she was back to her best.
Having reached the Australian Open final earlier this year, Muguruza did not have a great resumption at the US Open but that could be put down to the combination of rustiness and an injury that had kept her away from the Cincinnati Open. At the Italian Open, she showed no signs of either and that makes her one of the players to watch this French Open.
And it starts with an easy opener against Zidansek.

Zidansek in Early Days of Her WTA Circuit
Interestingly, the 82nd-ranked Zidansek didn’t participate in a single exhibition competition during the pandemic break and rushing back on to the tour, she crashed out in the first round of the Palermo Open.
A three-set win over Katerina Siniakova at Prague followed soon after, but a fighting defeat to Eugenie Bouchard, followed by a long period of tennis means it’s almost a fresh start for the Slovenian – it’s been nearly 45 days since she played a match.
That said, Zidansek loves playing on clay, and has won two WTA $125k tournaments on it – both coming in Bol over the past two seasons.
A runnerup trophy in another clay court competition last year in Nurnberg pushed her close to the top-50 on the WTA tour but with a 6-13 win-loss record on hard court surfaces proving to be a problem in 2019, Zidansek will have to play out of her skins to get back to her winning ways.
It might not begin against Muguruza though.
Muguruza v Zidansek Prediction and Tip
An easy match first up for Muguruza despite coming up against a player who has relished clay. Despite a chance of a fight from the Slovenian, Muguruza should come through in straight sets.
Tip: Games Handicap Zidansek +6.5: 8/11 (bet365)
