Marketa Vondrousova v Iga Swiatek Head to Head

This is the second time these two players will be meeting across any competitions and first on the WTA tour. Their previous meeting came in one of the exhibition competitions during the pandemic break, the Tipsport Elite Trophy at which Swiatek won in straight sets. It was on clay as well.

Vondrousova Regains Form in Rome

For many a weeks, it looked like the Vondrousova of 2019 had gone missing. The year-ending season she had in 2019 looked to have pushed her back as the Czech came up with one insipid performance after another before the pandemic, with her quarterfinal at the Adelaide International being her best showing.

Post the pandemic break, things looked to be not getting any better.

She started off at the Palermo Open and lost in the first round to the little-known Slovenian Kaja Juvan. Another opening loss followed at the Cincinnati Open, this time to Laura Siegemund, before her US Open campaign was ended in the second round at the hands of Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Which is why going into the Italian Open, the hope was for her to win a couple of matches to get some of her rhythm back going into the French Open. As it turned out, Vondrousova went on a bit of a roll, reaching the semifinal at the expense of Polona Hercog and Elina Svitolina before losing to Karolina Pliskova.

While regaining a finals berth would be a tough ask again for the Czech, she sure would go into this very tough opener against Swiatek with more than a modicum of confidence.

Swiatek Crashed out in Rome Opener

A talented 19-year-old in Swiatek and a lot was expected of her at the re-start of the season following the pandemic. After all, she had featured in a couple of exhibition tennis tournaments and won nine of the 10 matches she played on clay in those.

On resumption, while she went down in her opener at the Cincinnati Open, Swiatek managed to reach the third round at the US Open.

And when she went into the Italian Open with oodles of confidence from those wins in the exhibition games, one thought she could surprise a few rivals. After all, here’s a player, who in two years of playing Grand Slams, had already made the fourth round of French Open and Australian Open once apiece.

With a clay court runner-up trophy under her belt as well – it came in Lugano last season – she was starting out as one of the dark horses to at least go deep into the tournament. As it turned out, Swiatek fell in round one to Arantxa Rus.

Swiatek now has a task on her hands against the 2019 runner-up.

Vondrousova v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

Interesting to note Vondrousova starts off as 8/15 to win this, but we reckon it could be a lot tougher than this. A three-setter can be expected.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
