Pliskova Coming off a Solid Rome Run
There was a fitness concern at the end of her Italian Open final against Simona Halep but her overall performance was one befitting a world number two. Other than the quarterfinal against Elise Mertens where she dropped a set – but even there she came back to win the third 6-0 – Pliskova was clinical in her approach.
Barbora Strycova, Anna Blinkova and French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova are all difficult opponents to face and the adroit Pliskova used a combination of her excellent serve and powerful groundstrokes from the baseline to send them packing.
In the final, however, Pliskova proved to be no match for Halep, before having to withdraw from the match while she was 6-0, 2-1 down. The Czech will hope to put that injury behind and get going in this tournament, one where she was a semifinalist three years ago.
Other than that, however, Pliskova has never gone beyond the third round at Roland-Garros and it would be interesting to see how she overturns that. Because she has a relatively easier draw till at least the round of 16 and unless the cooler conditions in Paris make it a lot more difficult for her as the play gets slower, Pliskova looks a surety for a quarterfinal berth.

Sherif a Top Player at the ITF Circuit
Last season was the coming of age for Egyptian Sherif who won nine titles at the lower circuit including eight ITF competitions. As a result, what had begun as a year in 2018 where she was ranked 853rd in the world, saw her end 2019 on 194th.
And with another title this year, Sherif moved to her current 172nd on the rankings to go with the fact she is now playing in her maiden Grand Slam main draw match. In fact such has been the rapid rise in the 24-year-old’s performances, she hadn’t even played the qualifiers of a major till before this year.
Then, at the Australian Open earlier this season, Sherif got that chance and while she lost in the first round of the qualifiers there, it looked like she had taken to it rather fondly.
In more recent times, Mayer made the third round of the lower-level Prague Open, following on her from qualification for the WTA Prague a few weeks before that. Three straight set wins in the qualifier followed soon after to help her make it to the main draw.
Pliskova v Sherif Prediction and Tip
It’s surprising to see Pliskova not as short as one would expect against a player ranked that low, she starts off 1/7 to win this and 4/9 to do that in straight sets.
Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
