Anett Kontaveit v Caroline Garcia Head to Head
There have been three previous matches between Kontaveit and Garcia before this and the Estonian leads 2-1. In their first ever match at the 2016 Luxembourg Open, Garcia had needed three sets to edge out her opponent, but since then, in the two matches they have played on clay, Kontaveit has won them both – at the 2019 Stuttgart Open and one as recently as the Rome Open two weeks ago.

Kontaveit Hoping for Palermo Repeat
Starting out her post-pandemic break campaign at Palermo, Kontaveit was stretched in a couple of matches but showed grittiness in making it to the final, defeating Petra Martic on her way there. And while she went down fighting to Fiona Ferro in the final, she would be rather pleased with her showing despite having not played a single match on clay before that this season.
This was followed by a couple of strong showings on hard court – at the Cincinnati Open, Kontaveit made it to the quarterfinals with wins over Daria Kasatkina and Jil Teichmann and then followed it up with a fourth round appearance at the US Open. Kontaveit was no match for Naomi Osaka there but would have been chuffed with her run.
Where things did come crashing down a little were at Rome, where Kontaveit might have overcome Garcia in the first round but went down to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second.
Kontaveit’s best performance at Roland-Garros was her fourth round appearance at the 2018 edition, which would hope to emulate here, but with a potential Elise Mertens meeting coming up next in the third round, she needs a strong couple of rounds to garner some confidence.

Garcia Unable to Push on This Season
Garcia’s best result of the year came at the US Open where she made the third round of the competition. It was one of only two tournaments at which she won successive matches all year – the Lyon Open being the other – and that could lead to a lack of confidence.
Unfortunately for Garcia, she has now been drawn to play an opponent who is not just in some brilliant form in recent times, but had also defeated the Frenchwoman earlier this month.
That said, if Garcia wants to find motivation, she could look at her own showing in previous French Open editions – in 2017 she was a singles quarterfinalist, while having won the doubles title in 2016. Not that the doubles win counts for too much but it’s a feel-good factor to look back and reminisce and take the happy memories from the better performances.
Kontaveit v Garcia Prediction and Tip
Kontaveit starts off as a heavy favourite despite not a lot of difference between the two players as far as the rankings are concerned. She is 2/7 to win this and should do so comfortably. That said, the match could see at least one long set.
Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
