Alison Riske v Julia Goerges Head to Head
This is a solid rivalry with four matches played and both, Riske and Goerges having won two apiece. All four matches came on hard court surfaces.
Their first two matches, in Miami and Doha, was won by Goerges, before Riske came back to clinch their third in 2019 at Dubai. Their latest match-up came at the Australian Open 2020, where Riske needed three sets to make it to the fourth round.

Riske Form Tapers off Since Australian Open Run
While Riske has reached the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam once earlier, there have been a total of only two instances of the American making the fourth round before this year. Which is why when Riske made the fourth round of the Australian Open, things looked like they were headed upward for her.
Riske, who lost to Ash Barty in that tournament, has then gone on a bit of form rut. A first round loss at the Dubai and Qatar Open ended her pre-pandemic season and since she resumed after the break, Riske has lost three of her four matches.
At the Cincinnati Open, Amanda Anisimova overcame Riske in her opener, then Ann Li shocked her in straight sets in the second round at the US Open while Aliona Bolsova overturned a set deficit to defeat her at the Italian Open first round match.
Clay hasn’t been one of the most preferred surface for Riske, having never won more than she has lost in any year since 2011. Last season, incidentally, she participated in four tournaments and lost in the first round at all four.

Goerges Clay Form in Strife Too
Germany’s Goerges hasn’t played too much on clay this year but it was last season where her woes on clay came to the fore.
In the six tournaments she played last year, the 41st-ranked Goerges registered just one win, at the opening round in Rome, before she went down to Mihael Buzarnescu in the second. At Charleston, Stuttgart, Madrid, Paris and Lausanne, Goerges won a combined total of two sets.
Unfortunately for Goerges, she enters the French Open on the back of having played just one match in the post-pandemic season. That came at the Italian Open where she lost 6-1, 6-0 to Danka Kovinic. Before that her only appearance came at an exhibition tournament on grass, in Germany, and she lost in straight sets in that too.
In fact, Goerges last won a competitive main draw match at the Australian Open where she had made it to the third round. Things have gone drastically backwards for her since.
Riske v Goerges Prediction and Tip
It’s a match between two players who don’t prefer clay and who have been in poor form on other surfaces too! Tough call to make as a result but with Riske having played a lot more in recent times, she can be expected to be less rusty and starts our favourite.
Tip: Riske to win: 4/7 (bet365)
