Fritz Needs To Find Form, And Fast

Since the tennis tour’s resumption last month, Taylor Fritz has endured a tumultuous time on court. It all began in New York, when the young American found himself on the cusp of reaching the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Fritz served for the match in his third round meeting against Denis Shapovalov at the US Open, but he was unable to put away the Canadian with the finish line in sight. He was broken and Shapovalov wrestled control of proceedings. It seems the 22-year-old San Diego native hasn’t quite come to terms with that defeat.

Fritz would have certainly made the oddsmakers feel sheepish in the last two weeks of clay-court action. He was a favorite to win in both matches in Rome and Hamburg to seasoned clay-court specialists Stefano Travaglia and Pablo Cuevas respectively. Instead, he lost in straight sets, and his confidence has taken a massive hit on the eve of the 2020 French Open.

Seeded at no.27, the American who reached the final in Acapulco this year, will try to fine-tune his game in what should be a banker in his opening round match against a virtually unknown player on the main tour.

Machac Set to Make His Grand Slam Main Debut

A host of young guns will make their bouts at the 2020 French Open, but for 19-year-old little known Tomas Machac the story is somewhat different.

Machac was actually not slated to be in the qualifying draw in Paris. However, a number of players returned positive tests from the last round of Covid-19 tests, and the Czech was thrusted into his maiden qualifying draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. He stormed through without dropping set, beating Julian Lenz, Go Soeda and Frederico Ferreira Silva.

A meeting in the first round against the number 27 seed Taylor Fritz will mark his first top-100 opponent and a real step up in quality by some distance. His first Grand Slam match will coincidentally be his first match at tour-level, having spent most of his teenage years playing in the ITF junior circuit painstakingly building his ranking.

Machac currently sits at no.252 in the world and is rated highly by his peers and the Czech tennis fraternity. He won his first ATP Challenger title earlier this year in Koblenz, Germany and he is certainly a name to look out for in future.

Fritz v Machac Prediction and Tip

Fritz has been in terrible form since the tour’s restart and he is in danger of crushing all the good work he did before lockdown. From a career-high ranking of world no.24, he has dropped down a few spots to no.29, clearly showing he is not doing anything right at the moment. But on paper, this represents a perfect opportunity to redline his game and give his confidence a much-needed lift.

Tip: Fritz to win in straight sets: 7/4 (bet365)
