Casper Ruud v Yuichi Sugita Head to Head
This will be the first time that Ruud and Sugita will be facing off in a competitive encounter.

Runaway Form for Ruud
Since returning back from the pandemic lockdown, Ruud has featured in four tournaments and improved with every outing. He started off with a first round loss at the Cincinnati Masters to Diego Schwartzman and then managed a third round appearance at the US Open.
It was, however, when the action shifted to clay that Ruud’s form really began to flower.
Having ended the first part of the season with two ATP finals at Buenos Aires and Santiago – and he won at the former – Ruud looked like he was starting off from where he had left on clay.
With wins over Karen Khachanov, Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini, the Norwegian made it to the semifinal at the Rome Masters before the world number one Novak Djokovic ended his run. And then again, featuring at the Strasbourg Open, Ruud had no time for Benoit Paire, Fabio Fognini and Ugo Humbert on his way to another semifinal.
While he went down to Andrey Rublev in straight sets in that last-four encounter, he had done enough to break into the top 25 of the ATP rankings. With a couple of days of rest, Ruud will be raring to go again at the biggest event on clay where his best showing came last year with a third round appearance.

Sugita More a Hard-Courter
Once ranked 36th in the world, Japan’s Sugita is 93rd in the world at the moment, having gone from a 2018 season-high of 40th to a 2019 season-low of 274th and then floating somewhere in between those two right now.
This year, Sugita’s only two main draw wins on tour came early in the season – a first round victory at the Australian Open and then another opening win at the Pune Open. He lost in the second round at the former, while getting a walkover in the second round in Pune before going down in the quarterfinals there.
On clay, Sugita didn’t play a single match last year and in 2020, there have been three matches (one win, two losses) but none off them in the main draw of an ATP event. He failed to qualify for the Rome Masers and then went down in straight sets in the first round of the Forli Challenger.
Which is why, now coming up against a player showing rasping form on clay, Sugita couldn’t have asked for a much worse draw.
Ruud v Sugita Prediction and Tip
Ruud is 1/33 to win this, the kind of odds you would associate with Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal for heir opening round matches. Sugita might put up a fight in one of the sets, but cannot see him do a lot more than that.
Tip: Under 27.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
