Garbine Muguruza v Kristyna Pliskova Head to Head
Muguruza and Kristyna Pliskova haven’t played each other even once before this at a competitive level.

Muguruza All But Crashed Out
It was the kind of match where one player was on top for a while and soon after the positions were exchanged and the other player would take control. Till the very end it was tough to discern who would go on to pocket the encounter, and the result could well have been different to the current one.
That Muguruza defeated Tamara Zidansek was because at the most crucial time in the match, the Spaniard managed to hold serve – a part of the game that had been quite brittle for both players.
It started with the first set where Muguruza fell a break behind on two occasions only to break back and level, and then was a break up and serving for the set only to be broken back at 5-4. The former world number one, however, clinched the deciding break in the 11th game and wrapped up the set 7-5.
The roles were reversed in the second. Muguruza was up a break on two separate occasions, but failed to capitalise before getting broken while serving to stay in the set at 4-5.
The third set was cagier with both players losing their serve just once apiece, although Muguruza saved two break-points at 2-3, and then had three chances to break in a marathon seventh game of the set. The match-deciding moment came at 6-6 when Muguruza converted the second of her break points on that game and held on to win the set 8-6 in an exhausting match.
It’s not the kind of match she would have expected this early but it might have been a case of struggling to adapt to these conditions, which she hadn’t played in before. The Spaniard had come into the tournament on the back of a semifinal appearance at the Italian Open, so form wasn’t that big an issue.

Pliskova Wins in First Match Since US Open
While Kristyna Pliskova loves playing on clay there were always going to be question-marks going into her first round match against Victoria Kuzmova because of her lack of tennis all month. Pliskova had last played in the first round of the US Open, a match she lost to Donna Vekic and following that was conspicuous by her absence from the clay tournament swing.
This was after she had made a good start to the season resumption, making the second round at Palermo and then hopping on to the semifinal of the Prague Open before losing to Elise Mertens.
Which is also why a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing of Kuzmova would have pleased her no end as Pliskova looks to climb back the rankings, having gone down to 69th in the world from her career-best of 35th.
While her sister Karolina has had a healthy rivalry with Muguruza and beaten her multiple times, Kristyna will be facing Muguruza for the first time and would hope she can take something from the Spaniard’s first round near-debacle.
Muguruza v Pliskova Prediction and Tip
Muguruza starts off an overwhelming favourite, 1/4 to win this, but a bit of her confidence would have been eroded from what transpired in the first match. Going for a result+games double here.
Tip: Muguruza to win AND Over 19.5 games: 13/10 (bet365)
