Hercog Passes Parry Challenge

With a career-best of a third round appearance at the French Open, Hercog had come into the first round of this year’s edition of the competition as a huge favourite to put it across the 18-year-old Diane Parry. And while there were a few hiccups for Hercog in the first set of the match, the Slovenian came through in straight sets.

Hercog was broken in the very first service game, but she came back strongly to level things out at 2-2. Things went on serve for another couple of games before another couple of breaks of serves followed. It was Hercog who control when she broke for the third time in the set, and served it out to take the set.

The second set went to script for Hercog, who regained control of her serve and in turn breaking her opponent two times to wrap up the match easily.

Since returning from the pandemic break, Hercog had featured in five tournaments before her trip to Paris, all of which have come on clay. At Istanbul and Rome, she won a couple of rounds apiece, including at the latter where she stunned Kiki Bertens in the round two.

She now takes on another 18-year-old, one who is more attuned to playing on hard court surfaces.

Fernandez Shocks Linette

World number 36 Magda Linette was a favourite in her opener against Leylah Fernandez and when she romped through the first set 6-1, it looked like things were going to plan. And then, out of nowhere Fernandez found her feet and got moving, cruising through to a three-set win.

The difference in the first and second set was Fernandez’s first serve, going from a drastically low 31% to a staggering 92% points won on it. This was thanks to her a dramatic reduction in her unforced errors across those two sets, going down from 16 in the first set to five in the second.

The third set had Fernandez break Linette in the first game and then double the advantage in the third before consolidating it with her own serve to take a 4-0 lead. While the 31st seed broke back twice, her inability to retain her serve made it difficult for her and Fernandez came away a 6-3 winner in the final set.

Can she now surprise another experienced player?

Hercog v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Hercog starts off at 4/7 to win this but Fernandez might have a decent chance, at 11/8. Another tough battle could emerge which goes into the third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
