Shuai Zhang v Alize Cornet Head to Head
There have been six meetings between the two prior to this and Cornet leads the tally 4-2.
Their only meeting on clay was 12 years ago at the qualifying stage of this competition which the Frenchwoman won. After that, she won once again in Beijing later that year, at the Australian Open in 2015 and in Eastbourne last year. The Chinese player, on the other hand, won at the Indian Wells in 2012 and at the Australian Open in 2016.

Zhang Knocks Out 2018 Semi-Finalist
31-year-old, Zhang took full advantage of an out of sorts Madison Keys in the first round.
Keys, who had to retire in the third round at the US Open due to a neck injury, was playing her first match since then. And Zhang started very strongly and did not let up to put the world number 16 and the 2018 semi-finalist here in Paris out in the first round itself.
After a poor start to the season after pandemic break, the Chinese has found her rhythm on the red soil. She lost in the first round at Cincinnati and the US Open but found her form at Strasbourg last week.
She started from the qualifying stages and reached the last eight in the end. And her recent success on the red soil is rather surprising considering the fact that she had lost more matches on the surface then she had won in her career prior to Strasbourg.
Zhang’s best-ever showing at the French Open was reaching the third round back in 2017. And she would be hoping to continue her impressive run and equal that.

Cornet With a Comfortable Opener
The 30-year-old Cornet was up against her countrywoman, Chloe Paquet in the first round with Paquet on a nine-match losing streak in WTA events this year and without a win on clay this season, it was clear who was the favourite. The gulf in class was visible as Cornet wrapped up the match in less than one and a half hour.
Cornet is looking to get into her groove this week in Paris and all the signs so far are indicating a strong run from her.
This was after she did not look at her best throughout the first half of the season, showing inconsistencies but the break in the season looks to have allowed her to get over her niggling injuries and get her match fitness back.
After the resumption, she reached the round of 16 at both, the Cincinnati Open and the US Open and she will be gunning for something similar up here at Roland-Garros.
Shuai Zhang v Alize Cornet Prediction and Tip
This is likely to be a close contest. Zhang is in form and is the higher-ranked player. But Cornet’s game is ideally suited for this surface and is looking back to her best. The match will go to three sets but Cornet should progress through.
Tip: Cornet to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
