Aryna Sabalenka v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it was Kasatkina who won it at the China Open last year. It came in the second round, with Kasatkina bowing out to Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

Sabalenka Back to Her Best?

A second round loss at Lexington, a second match defeat at Cincinnati and another second-rounder at the US Open. These were the three results for Sabalenka just after returning to the tour following the pandemic break.

Not only is Sabalenka one of the top players but she is at her best on hard courts and for her to endure the ignominy of those early defeats would have been telling.

Which is why when she defeated Katerina Siniakova in the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg Open last week, Sabalenka had finally broken through her second round jinx, but then endured a loss at the hands of the eventual winner Elina Svitolina. It was a fighting match and the overall showing at Strasbourg would have given her that confidence coming into the first round here at the French Open.

Sabalenka faced a tricky opener though, against Jessica Pegula, a player who had herself made the quarterfinal at the Cincinnati Open and the third round at the US Open. On clay, however, Pegula fell apart as Sabalenka put up a showing worthy of a top-10 player and crushed her opponent 6-3, 6-1.

There were a few initial holding hiccups for Sabalenka but once she had been able to establish superiority, there was no looking back in the second set as the Belarusian slammed her way through to the second round.

2018 Quarterfinalist Kasatkina Shows Her Mettle

The scenes of Victoria Azarenka consoling a weeping Kasatkina at the Italian Open earlier this month as the latter struggled through an injury and had to retire from that third round match made headlines in the tennis world. While Azarenka’s sporting spirit shone through that incident, the one aspect of that match hasn’t been spoken about enough.

The fact that here was Azarenka, fresh from having crushed the Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin 6-0, 6-0 in the previous round, and with the Cincinnati Open title and US Open runnerup trophy under her belt, getting a working over from Kasatkina in that first set. The scoreline was 6-6, with the players in the tie-breaker of that set when the Russian had to sadly bow out of the competition.

The Russian had been in impressive form all tournament in Rome, winning two qualifiers and the first two rounds there – all of which came without Kasatkina dropping more than three games in a set.

And shrugging off that injury which caused her to retire, Kasatkina wasted no time in dispatching Harmony Tan in the first round here at Roland-Garros, winning 6-2, 6-1 and booking herself a spot for a match-up with Sabalenka.

She was on the verge of something in that match at Strasbourg against a Belarusian, can Kasatkina finish off what she started against the higher-ranked player from Belarus instead?

Sabalenka v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip

This could well be a tight contest despite Sabalenka’s form and while she starts off at 8/13 we think Kasatkina has at least a set in this match.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
