Petra Martic v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head
The only previous outing between these two players happened in the 2019 Wuhan Open in which Martic moved into the last-eight with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kudermetova.

Croatia’s Martic comes into the second round after struggling to get past Japan’s Doi 7-6, 7-5, but she will be pleased to have done so after her opening defeat at the Italian Open. There she had a first round bye before Yulia Putintseva sent her packing in three sets but in the first round here, Martic looked to have come out with a more solid game.
That Doi fought tooth and nail meant things could have gone either way but Martic’s ability to absorb the pressure and win the crucial points helped her through.
Take, for instance the winners and unforced errors for both; Martic had a 31-31 ratio while Doi only hit one unforced error more than she hit winners. The crucial difference came on the first serves where Martic got 65% right, winning 74% of the points.
Martic, who had begun the post-pandemic season with a semifinal at the Palermo Open under her belt, will grab this win with both hands given the drastically different playing conditions in the tournament. Now for her to get closer to her best performance ever at Roland-Garros, her quarterfinal appearance last season.

Kudermetova Gets Past Parmentier
Kudermetova had a far easier opening round win, as she trounced Pauline Parmentier 6-2, 6-3 to make it through to the second round of probably what would be her favourite Grand Slam. Last year, she had entered round three at this competition, making it her best performance ever at a major.
The win also stalls a three-match losing streak for Kudermetova which began at the Cincinnati Open where she went down to Elise Mertens in the third round before falling in the US Open and Italian Open openers – losing to Iga Swiatek and Barbora Strycova by identical scorelines of 6-3, 6-3.
This also meant Kudermetova had shrugged off three successive opening round losses at Grand Slams. Starting with an opening defeat at the US Open last season, the Russian had lost at the Australian Open and US Open openers this season too.
Martic will be a difficult opposition though given her credentials on clay.
