Collins Finally Wins One

Collins had torn into Novak Djokovic for his issues with the US Open bubble in the lead-up to the tournament but had later been withdrawn from the World TeamTennis for breaking the Covid19 protocols set by the tournament officials.

Since her return, Collins hadn’t won a single match, but then again she had opted to play just in the American swing – at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. Losing to Jil Teichmann and Anett Kontaveit in both those openers, Collins opted not to feature in any of the rest of the tournaments in Europe following that and featured in the French Open straightaway.

Fortunately for Collins, she was drawn Monica Niculescu in her opener – a former world number 28 who has fallen to 141st in the world right now and had had to pass a qualifier to make the main draw. And while Collins made a slow start, losing the first set, she won the next two to clinch her first ever win on the tour since her first round win at the 2020 Australian Open.

A semifinalist at the Australian Open last year, Collins will hope to push on in her section and try and make it past her previous best at Roland-Garros – a second round exit last year. As luck would have it, she has a 188th-ranked player up against her.

Tauson Causes One of the Upsets of the Tournaments

Now Jennifer Brady doesn’t have the best of records on clay but she was a US Open semifinalist less than a month and as far as confidence goes, would have had the second to none. Except it did turn out to be second to Tauson, and she ended in the match that way as well, finishing second to Tauson.

In a match of small margins, the 17-year-old Tauson defied her age and used her first serve effectively against Brady, getting 72% of them correct while going on to win 63% of the points as a result.

While her winners-unforced errors record of 48-46 wasn’t as good as her opponent’s 39-25, she crunched more than at the right time and while both players got an equal number of breaks, five apiece, Tauson got hers at the most crucial of times – in the 15th game of the final set – to help her win.

Tauson, who is playing in her first senior Grand Slam, wrapped up her opening win at a major 6-4, 3-6, 9-7 to seal her second round berth.

Collins v Tauson Prediction and Tip

Tauson’s aggression has taken everyone by surprise and the bookmakers have installed her as a favourite here thanks mainly due to her recent showing on clay on the ITF circuit – she won an ITF Oeiras competition on the surface only last month. Collins’ struggles on red dirt could be the reason why she is 11/8 in this.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 4/5 (bet365)
