Van Uytvanck Notches up Surprise Win

Post the pandemic break, van Uytvanck looked to have lost all the sparkle she had begun showing just prior to when the sport went on a hiatus. In the lead-up to this year’s French Open, van Uytvanck had won just one of the six matches she featured in including three defeats on clay.

And things didn’t look like they were getting any better when van Uytvanck was broken twice in a span of two service games in the very first set of her opener against Rebecca Peterson. She did win one of those back, only to drop serve yet again to lose the opening set 6-2.

The roles were reversed in the second set, when out of nowhere van Uytvanck raced to a 3-0 lead and while she lost one of her break advantages, the set was won with a break in the end. Match was levelled, confidence was back and now it was a small matter of pressing home the advantage.

That’s exactly what she did. Another 3-0 lead after a break of serve was followed by a second break soon after which led to van Uytvanck serving for the match at 5-1.

And while she fell 0-40 behind on serve, van Uytvanck came back to wrap up the game, set and the match to move to the second round of the only Grand Slam in which has a quarterfinal to her name.

Bara Bulldozes Vekic in Opener

Having featured in her first Grand Slam in 2017, Irina Bara had yet to reach the main draw of one since, having made 11 previous attempts. Her best showing had been a third qualifying round and that had come at the French Open but here we are on attempt number 12 Bara can realistically dream of a third round berth.

And that comes courtesy a shock win for Bara over the world number 30 Donna Vekic in round one at this year’s Roland-Garros.

In a match lasting nearly two hours, Bara adjusted way better to the conditions as she made just 11 unforced errors in the entire match to her opponent’s whopping 34 and that proved to be the biggest difference between the two players.

Vekic had come into the match with form issues behind her back but not too many thought of the Romanian qualifier would cruise to a 6-3, 6-4 win, breaking her serve five times in the encounter.

What will be on Bara’s favour here, other than the obvious confidence from having dismissed Vekic from round one is her record at the lower tier on clay – she has reached the finals of 19 ITF tournament finals, won 10 and all of those have come on red dirt.

Van Uytvanck v Bara Prediction and Tip

Van Uytvanck is a slight favourite here at 8/11 while we think Bara’s confidence would be super-high and could actually edge the contest but it’s a tough call either ways. Looking at a three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
