Tsvetana Pironkova v Barbora Krejčíková Head to Head

This will be the first match between Pironkova and Krejčíková.

Pironkova Benefits from Serena Withdrawal

Pironkova is only her second tournament of the season – of three seasons in fact – and she was going to take on former world number one Serena Williams for the second time in a row. The last time they had played at the US Open, Pironkova had started off well, won the first set, and then came down crashing against the might of her opponent.

This time? Well, it would have been an interesting contest given the change in surface might have helped Pironkova more than Serena but it turned out to be a damp squib. Serena, who had struggled through the first set of her opening round match against Kristie Ahn, suffered an Achilles Heel injury soon after and had to withdraw from their match.

As a result, Pironkova is in the third round of the competition for the second time in a row, after having made it there at the US Open and gone two steps beyond. She defeated Andrea Petkovic in the first round of this tournament and that fighting Serena loss at Flushing Meadows continues to remain her only defeat.

Can she use this extra break and work it in her favour or will it hurt her chances of not having played for four days?

Krejčíková Wins the Battle of Barboras

Czech Republic saw Barbora Krejčíková take on Barbora Strycova in the second round of the competition and it was the former who came out on top. But not before a fight from Strycova.

Strycova, in fact, was the first to draw blood when she broke her opponent to take a 4-1 lead but that was followed by Krejčíková reel off five games, including two service breaks to scoop the first set from behind.

It looked like history might repeat itself in the second set when Strycova was off to another flier, breaking Krejčíková early again and a further exchange of breaks later, she made it 4-1 in her favour for the second time in the match. And for the second time Krejčíková got it back to a parity in breaks but Strycove then won the next two games to win the set.

Set three, again, Strycova got the first break but this time Krejčíková looked to be equal to the task from very early as she levelled things out at 1-1, and then won a further three games in a row with an extra break in hand. Very soon she closed out the set 6-3 to move to her maiden Grand Slam third round.

Pironkova v Krejčíková Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between the two players here with Pironkova only a mild favourite at 4/5. Getting good odds for the number of games in the first set here, which we would look to go for in a fairly evenly placed encounter.

Tip: 1st set total games – Over 9.5: 11/10 (bet365)
