Cristian Garin v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

Garin Makes it 15-3 on Clay This Season

A couple of clay court titles in the season already, Garin has now made it to the third round of this edition of the French Open, which will be his maiden presence this far in a Grand Slam competition. And frankly after all the good results he has had on clay this year, it would have been a travesty not to travel somewhat of a distance at this year’s French Open.

The path, however, hasn’t been the most linear for Garin.

In his first round match against Philipp Kohlschreiber, Garin dropped a set before recovering to win the next two and making the next round. And that repeated in the second round as well when Garin required to come back from a set down to overcome Marc Polmans.

The first set wasn’t without its tussle from Garin. He fell a break behind, broke back, lost the serve again only to level the proceedings at 4-4 and take the set into a tie-breaker. There, he recovered from 2-6 down to 5-6 but Polmans held his nerve and clinched the tie-breaker.

Even as he lost his serve yet again in the first game of the second set, Garin wasn’t going to be dominated and raced off to win the next four games in a row and seven from the next eight.

Polmans had a chance to take the lead once again when he got a chance to serve for the third set at 5-4 but lost the game and very soon, the set in another tie-breaker. By this Garin looked to have found his measure of Polmans and all it needed was one break of serve in the fourth set for Garin to complete the win.

A hard-fought but well-deserved third round spot for Garin.

Khachanov Finds a Way to Win

While Khachanov’s record on clay isn’t the strongest, he does find ways of eking out wins from tough situations.

Despite having no ATP titles under his belt on red dirt – and he has four on other surfaces including a Masters win – Khachanov’s best Grand Slam performance has come at Roland-Garros. It was a quarterfinal last year.

And here he is, this season, back again in the third round despite having struggled all year on clay. There was a first round loss at the Rome Masters, and a second round defeat at the Hamburg Open but somehow, again, Khachanov has found a way through to the third round at Roland-Garros.

He defeated Kamil Majchrzak in his first round before overcoming Jiri Vesely in a tough four-setter – consisting of three tie-breakers – in his second round victory. And while his toughest test of recent times comes here, Khachanov’s fighting capabilities could make this a very even match.

Garin v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Here’s something interesting. Considering all knock-out tournaments this year, Khachanov hasn’t won three matches in a row in any of the ones he has participated in, losing in round three at four of them. Can he get fifth time lucky?

Tip: Four sets in the match: 8/5 (bet365)
