Petra Kvitova v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 30-year-old Kvitova and Fernandez, who is 12 years her junior.

Kvitova Getting the Work Done

2012 semifinalist Kvitova wasn’t quite a favourite coming into the tournament but if her performances over the first two rounds can be used as a barometer, she could well be in the running to go really deep.

In her opener, Kvitova had to face a few difficulties in the second set against Oceane Dodin but had come through in straight sets. There were no such worries in her second round win, as she got the better of Jasmine Paolini without too much ado.

In a match lasting less than an hour and a half, Kvitova got only 53% of her first serves in, and made 36 unforced errors but still won with plenty to spare – a 6-3, 6-3 victory suggesting the ease with which she came through.

While those statistics are damning, they are also the kind Kvitova can easily take control of and improve as she grows into the tournament. And with her quarter of the draw looking as bare as it is right now, Kvitova will know she has a great chance to get into the second week of the tournament.

That said, 18-year-old Fernandez is an upcoming and talented player who could make things tight if taken lightly.

Fernandez Stitching Together Her Best Each Major

The Australian Open earlier this year was Canadian Fernandez’s first ever major appearance and she made it to the main draw through the qualifiers before losing her opener to Lauren Davis. This was followed by the US Open where a stack of withdrawals meant Fernandez made it to the main draw directly and went on to win her opener against Vera Zvonareva before losing to Sofia Kenin.

And here she is, playing in her third Grand Slam, and into the third round for the first time!

It didn’t look like that would be the case when she lost the first set of her opener to Magda Linette. That she came back to win the next two that easily against a player of the calibre of Linette before sending out the Slovenian veteran Polona Hercog speaks volumes about her maturity at such an age.

Fernandez won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and while Kvitova will be a huge step-up in terms of opposition quality, she has given enough indication she wouldn’t be overawed.

Kvitova v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Kvitova starts at 1/4 and she should be a favourite to scoop this, just that it might not be as easy at it sounds. Looking at the games market.

Tip: Kvitova to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 7/5 (bet365)
