Grigor Dimitrov v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

This will be the first match between Dimitrov and Carballes Baena at the highest level.

Dimitrov Growing in Form

For a player who has never made it to the fourth round at the French Open, this serves as one of his best opportunities. In fact, over these last three years, he did make it as far as the third round here at Roland-Garros, losing to Pablo Carreno Busta, Fernanda Verdasco and Stan Wawrinka at those three editions.

This time he takes on a player ranked outside the top 100, making it a good chance to go through.

What also works in his favour is his own form. Dimitrov was a quarterfinalist at the Rome Masters, only the second time he reached that far at the Italian Open. And in this tournament itself, Dimitrov defeated Gregoire Barrere and Andrej Martin, both of which were straight-set victories as well.

In his second round match against Martin, Dimitrov hit 29 winners and four aces but usurped his opponent with a 63% of the second service points won.

Carballes Baena Overcomes Form Issues

Carballes Baena, ranked 101st in the world, has one WTA title under his belt and that came on clay in 2018. Since then, the Spaniard’s form hasn’t quite been up to the scratch, with only one instance of back to back victories in a tournament before this.

And that had come early in the year and in a Challenger in Bendigo. Since then he has been a part of a few clay court competitions before the pandemic break, but lost early at Buenos Aires, Rio and Santiago while returning post pandemic to fall in the qualifiers at Rome.

The good news for Carballes Baena is he had been featuring in exhibition competitions during the break. He won four of those five matches on clay and then returned to feature in the Todi Challenger where he made the second round.

At the French Open, however, it has been a shock showing, which began with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 rout of Steven Johnson and saw him get past Denis Shapovalov in the second. In a very tight encounter against Canadian world number 11, who was 1/5 to win the match, Carballes Baena took him to the fifth set which he clinched 8-6.

Can he show that same sparkle against Dimitrov?

Dimitrov v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

Much like Shapovalov, Dimitrov’s 1/4 to win this but it wouldn’t be too much to expect Carballes Baena to pocket a set.

Tip: Dimitrov to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
