Below are the previews to the semifinals of both sections of the draw, which we will update as the match-ups get decided.

Iga Swiatek v [Q] Nadia Podoroska

If someone had predicted – and bet on – a semifinal match-up between Swiatek and Podoroska before the start of the tournament, the person would have been quite rich by now.

A player outside the top 50 getting to the semifinal is surprising but has happened before, but for someone ranked 131st in the world to join her in a match-up is stunningly rare. Swiatek has beaten Simona Halep and is yet to drop a set while Podoroska routed Elina Svitolina and is on a 13-match winning streak across all tiers. Interesting match-up ahead.

[4] Sofia Kenin v [7] Petra Kvitova

The experience of Petra Kvitova will take on the youth and momentum of Sofia Kenin, who had earlier won the Australian Open title this year. Kvitova has reached the semifinal at the French Open only once before this while Kenin had come into this tournament with some form issues which she has resurrected with her fighting display here. That Kvitova has won all her matches at Roland Garros this year in straight sets and should be a favourite.

[2] Rafael Nadal v [12] Diego Schwartzman

Form issues, rustiness or otherwise, it hasn’t taken Rafael Nadal a lot to seal his berth in the semifinal. Another straight-set win over Jannik Sinner who had sent Alexander Zverev out takes him closer to that 13th French Open title and playing him next is the player who had beaten him only recently. Diego Schwartzman had taken Nadal out at the Rome Masters and is coming off a draining but confidence-inducing victory over Dominic Thiem.

On paper, Nadal is 1/7 to win this because this is a best-of-five match and to expect Schwartzman to play at the level he did in Rome again would be probably expecting too much. Still, an exciting match-up here.

[1] Novak Djokovic v [5] Stefanos Tsitsipas

Novak Djokovic lost his first set of the tournament to Pablo Carreno Busta in the quarterfinal but overcame that and his neck trouble to march into the last four stage of the competition. He will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas, a player who has beaten him two of the five times they have played before this. Tsitsipas himself has had form issues but slowly built into winning 15 sets in a row after it had looked he was going out in round one when he fell two sets down.

The women’s singles semifinals will be played on October 8 while the men’s singles semifinals will be hosted on October 9.
