It’s a final not too many envisaged at the start of the tournament. Sure, Sofia Kenin is the Australian Open winner from earlier this year but her form on clay hasn’t been as stellar as the other surfaces and she had come into the French Open two weeks ago on the back of a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Victoria Azarenka.
On the other hand, her opponent is, or at least was before the start of the tournament, ranked outside the top 50. Swiatek had shown what she is capable of in the previous Slams too, reaching third and fourth rounds over the two seasons of majors appearance but for her to make it to the final here, and in the manner she has done, has been extraordinary.
Swiatek is yet to drop a set and that includes a stunning 6-1, 6-2 win over Simona Halep earlier in the tournament. On the other hand, Kenin has been tested, stretched and pushed but she has always stood up and delivered when the going has gotten tougher.
What remains to be seen is if the experience from Kenin’s run at the Australian Open and confidence from her victory over Serena Williams in the previous year’s French Open can prove to be decisive against a supremely talented but a first-timer in a Grand Slam final.
