Marin Cilic v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head
There has been one previous outing between Cilic and Berankis and that had come in the second round of the 2015 Wimbledon. Berankis had stretched Cilic to five sets in that encounter before Cilic won 7-5 in the final set.

Cilic Will Welcome the Return of Hard Court Season
While Cilic isn’t as proficient on indoor hard court surfaces in recent history as he is outdoor, he would only be happy to have bid the clay court swing an adieu for this season.
After featuring at the Adria Tour, where he lost all his three matches – but fortunately tested negative for Covid19 – Cilic did give himself a chance to put up a fight at the Rome Masters, another tournament played on clay. After defeating Alexander Bublik and David Goffin, Cilic, however, stumbled in the third round against Casper Ruud.
If that was expected to give him some hope at the French Open, a tournament where he has made the quarterfinal on two previous occasions, his misfortune of being drawn to play Dominic Thiem round one was only compounded by what he dished out at the match. Cilic managed to win just 10 games in the match, never coming close to challenging the US Open winner.
That wouldn’t, however, make him any less of a threat on a surface where he has won eight of his 16 career titles. None of them, however, have come since 2016, which is something he would like to turn around.

Berankis Coming off Joint-Best Grand Slam Showing
While Berankis was knocked out by Novak Djokovic in the second round at the French Open, his showing at the US Open would have given him hope. Hope that even at 30 and despite having been on the circuit for over a decade, he still has a chance to better his career-best ranking of 50th in the world.
Because it was the US Open, Berankis made it to the third round before losing to Pablo Carreno Busta, equalling his best performance at a major ever. More specifically, he hadn’t reached the third round of a major since the Australian Open of 2013 before the US Open this year.
Earlier he had come through the qualifiers and made the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters, before losing in the second round to Djokovic again having also made it to the semifinal at the Pune Open.
For someone ranked 66th in the world, he has had a decent season without creating a huge impact. Can he shock Cilic and take that step forward?
Cilic v Berankis Prediction and Tip
Cilic might not have had the best form in recent times but on indoor hard courts, he will start with an edge against Berankis. It might not be a big one though given Berankis likes the surface too and we could see this to be a hard-fought one, going into a third.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
