Hurkacz Itching for a Deep Run

For a player ranked 31st in the world and itching to get himself a shot at the top 25 on the rankings, Hurkacz is in a desperate need for a deeper run in tournaments. Since winning all his three matches at the ATP Cup and then entering the semifinal at the Auckland Open, Hurkacz has endured some on-court struggles.

In fact between January and the Rome Masters, there wasn’t a single tournament Hurkacz managed to win back to back matches, losing alternately in the first and second round of tournaments before the pandemic.

Even after the break, the return to tennis saw Hurkacz crash out in the first round at the Cincinnati Masters and then the second round at the US Open.

It was with that kind of form he entered the Rome Masters, where he finally reached the third round, but more vitally defeated Dan Evans and Andrey Rublev on the way before falling to Diego Schwartzman.

An early defeat at the French Open might have taken the sting off that solid Rome showing but he now returns to indoor hard-court which bring with it, its own challenge. Over the last two seasons, Hurkacz has won just three matches on this surface and lost nine – not the kind of record he would want to take with him to this competition.

Polmans Aiming for Top 100

The Aussie world number 116 is currently at his career-best, having reached it following his run at the French Open. Starting out as a qualifier, Polmans made it to the second round, which included a win over Ugo Humbert in the opening round.

Polmans had gone into that encounter on odds of 21/4 and managed to overcome his French opponent in four, relatively easy sets. This took his to the second round of a major for just the second time in his short career. The first had, incidentally, come at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Here at Cologne, Polmans lost in the second round of the qualifiers to Oscar Otte, but has joined in the draw as a lucky loser.

What’s interesting to note is before this, Polmans has played in only three indoors tournament across all tiers, and while he lost in the openers at both of the first two, his third tournament proved to be bit of a relief. Featuring in the Kaohsiung Challenger last year, the Aussie reached the final of that competition before losing to fellow countryman John Millman.

Hurkacz v Polmans Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is the clear favourite here, starting out at 4/11 and while we are tempted to go with a straight-set win (which is 1/1 with bet365), we will try keeping it a safe one here.

Tip: Hurkacz to win: 4/11 (bet365)
